Hi all,
Happy chilly days. Procedural question I have a Yamaha 2k portable generator wiling 30a amp output. Shore power connector fits perfectly. To use do I start gen and plug in, then flip shore power breakers on panel on last, or put panel breakers on first. Start gen then plug in shore cable into already running gen with breakers already on. Is there any way I could damage boat wiring or switches. Thanks for advice.

Plug genny in, start her up, confirm power by checking shore power volts are up, then start A/C.

I reccomend installing a Soft Start to the A/C as to not trip the generator. The Soft Start simply allows the A/C to turn on gradually (30-40 secs) to reach full power rather than start at full power and risk tripping the genny.

Good luck!

well, first I'd question whether a 2000 watt generator would produce 30 amps at rated power, not maximum.

Perusing the Yamaha generator website yields manufacturers specs.

Once that question is solved, I would:
1- start generator and let warm up for a few minutes
2- make sure breakers off, and shore power switch off in boat
3- make sure power breaker off on generator
4- plug in shore power cable; try not to plug/unplug an energized cable - may cause arcing
5- once warmed up, turn on power breaker on gen
6- turn on shore power switch; check for reverse polarity and a/c voltage
7- turn on a/c

when turning off, do procedure in reverse. check generator manual to see if they recommend letting it cool down with no load for a few minutes before shutdown.

Good luck.

cwalden,
I also have a R-23. I run a Harbor Freight 2000w generator. I've plugged in and fired up both ways W/O issue. I have never had a problem with the gen running the AC. I don't use the shore power cord, way to much cord to have laying around. I use a 10' 6 gauge extension cord to a shore power adapter. If the extension cord can't handle the load the AC won't start. Ask me how I know...
