Generator zinc

I have a 2017 R29-CB. Does the generator require a zinc? It's not mentioned in the manual but a friend with a Cutwater mentioned that he had to change out his generator zinc. First thought "there's a zinc on the generator?"

On the 2018 R29S we recently sold, it had a NextGen generator and it has a pencil zinc, but the VP Diesel D4 had none. Having a zinc depends on the make, model and year of your machinery. Which generator do you have?

Hi all,

Scuba Too, I believe your Next Gen in 2017 may have been pre-pencil zinc, but you would have to check to be sure. One reason other than that this is probably why it was not in the manual is that we do not sell these either. You should check to be sure and if so you should be able to find them relatively easily on the net. Hope this helps.

The manual for the Next-Gen does call out a 3/8 NPT Pencil Type zinc. It doesn't have the length though - any ideas on this?

The Next Gen zinc is 3/8 pencil 1/4 NPT. My understanding is that pencil zincs only come in one length.

NextGen lists it as a 3/8 NPT in the manual but that is misleading. If you order that size it will be too big. It’s a 1/4NPT and you can find these on boatzincs.com. I think the 3/8 is the actual dimension but irrelevant when ordering. They come in various lengths. Mine was 1.75” long. It seemed snug when I was tightening it and not wishing to have any issues l, I took a pipe cutter and cut off 1/4” and it fit fine. Not sure if I needed to do that but wasn’t in the mood of breaking something that would turn into a project to fix. If you have time call NextGen for the length. They are helpful but I changed mine during a weekend and just wanted to get it done.
