Gensets

We purchased a Ranger-25 this month, for use on the Chesapeake out of Rock Hall. We needadvice about gensets, as we did not take the factory option. This winter would be a good time to install one for next year.

On the Tugnut site, I see one recommendation for the Cummins-Onan, and one for the gasoline Honda E 2000. any other advice? We have been cautioned to be careful about the noise level, including the factory installed Mase unit.

With generators the mounting can make all the difference. I have a R29 which did not have the factory unit. A Kohler 6kw was installed and if you stand outside the boat you would be very pleased with the noise level. Inside is another story. The further you get from the generator the louder is becomes. In the forward berth it is real loud. You could never sleep or watch TV or in any way relax with it running. Somehow the generator is causing a vibration that resonates forward and becomes very loud when it can go no further.

On November 5 the generator is being remounted with help from Sound Down, a company that specializes in equipment noise reduction. I will let you know the results.

Not sure what size generator you are looking for but you may want to investigate the WhisperPower SC3.5. Looks like a good unit and is the smallest "quiet"diesel generator.

I am thinking of switching to this unit. Do not need 6kw as I have the propane stove. Just want to be able to run AC while underway and on the hook

Shared Dream has the Cummings-Onan QSD5.0. This was added to the boat on the West coast just prior to moving to the East Coast. The noise level allows for normal conversation inside the boat. Multiple times we have ran the generator through the night while sleeping soundly. It amply handles the dual air conditioners and the remaining power needs of the boat.
