Has anyone purchased the newest edition of the Go Pro camera? Looking for the best one and best mount to use on my Ranger SC25. My wife is driving me nuts as to suggestions of a Christmas present I might want. An R 29 idea has been nixed 🙂. All I really want for Christmas is for our house in Annapolis to sell and we can move to Florida!

Thanks

Make sure your wife does not also nix your move to Florida. I don't say this in jest as I had hoped we could have moved to a certain location after selling our house before retiring, but wife nixed that, but did accept our R-25 purchase.

Life is full of compromises. 😱

The newer Go-Pro looks awesome and I hope you're successful. Mind you, some money can be saved by buying the latest - 1 model.

Just for conversation sake, my wife got me one of the previous GoPro cameras, a 3 Black. I was a professional photographer for 32 years; I am pretty darn computer literate; really, I was a very early adopter of using the iPad for marine navigation - a first edition iPad with wifi/cellular.

The GoPro is probably best for people who are doing "extreme" stuff... like sports. Oh, I used it on our boat; set it up on our motorscoots, took it out on the kayaks. Yawn. None of those would be considered "extreme." Or, particularly interesting to watch a video. I even did some editing, put some music to it. Yawn. Tried it for photos, but the extreme wide angle (the only "extreme" with my usage) got old pretty quick. Not to mention all the up my nose photos I got thanks to the 3 buttons to scroll through the myriad of menu options... a menu, by the way, that is a weak gray screen the size of my thumb nail.

To add to the fun, I bought a bunch of different mounts, thinking I'd find some way to make it less... one-trick-pony-ish. Yawn.

I haven't surfed since I nearly broke my neck about 8 or 9 years ago in Hawaii. My two-wheel riding these days is on a motorscooter, not a high performance sport bike. I have a bicycle... OK for a nice paved bike path, but I am at the age that it takes WAY too long to heal to get back on a real mountain bike again.

I have no issue with using a variety of cameras... that have buttons that are adult-person sized... and are WAY more complex and capable than the GoPro.

I know there are plenty of people out there who enjoy using a GoPro. Not all of us feel the same about it.

The remote controlled quadcopters with a gopro attached can create some unique views while underway. The non gyro dji phantom is inexpensive and can create some great 8 second steady shots, and fun to fly. I've tested the hero3 back vs silver 3 and the black had noticeable better quality. The headband mount and jaw mounts are good and the pole mount is popular for self filming. The steadi cam mount is cool, and can do nice shooting with no shake and gives that floating on air look. The hero 3 black has poor light qaulity, night time shooting is pretty useless. I've heard this is much better with the hero 4.
My experince with the gopro's has been they serve a purpose for when you wouldn't want to risk a nice camera. time lapse video while attached to mast in the rain, stuck to the hull for wave shots, straped to bow of a paddle board.
The hero3 black has horrible battery life, maybe an 1 hour, and I usullay only get about 45 seconds of useable footage the rest is too shaky or just boring to watch.
Check out the quadcopters/drones, some even have their own camera built in.
