Just for conversation sake, my wife got me one of the previous GoPro cameras, a 3 Black. I was a professional photographer for 32 years; I am pretty darn computer literate; really, I was a very early adopter of using the iPad for marine navigation - a first edition iPad with wifi/cellular.
The GoPro is probably best for people who are doing "extreme" stuff... like sports. Oh, I used it on our boat; set it up on our motorscoots, took it out on the kayaks. Yawn. None of those would be considered "extreme." Or, particularly interesting to watch a video. I even did some editing, put some music to it. Yawn. Tried it for photos, but the extreme wide angle (the only "extreme" with my usage) got old pretty quick. Not to mention all the up my nose photos I got thanks to the 3 buttons to scroll through the myriad of menu options... a menu, by the way, that is a weak gray screen the size of my thumb nail.
To add to the fun, I bought a bunch of different mounts, thinking I'd find some way to make it less... one-trick-pony-ish. Yawn.
I haven't surfed since I nearly broke my neck about 8 or 9 years ago in Hawaii. My two-wheel riding these days is on a motorscooter, not a high performance sport bike. I have a bicycle... OK for a nice paved bike path, but I am at the age that it takes WAY too long to heal to get back on a real mountain bike again.
I have no issue with using a variety of cameras... that have buttons that are adult-person sized... and are WAY more complex and capable than the GoPro.
I know there are plenty of people out there who enjoy using a GoPro. Not all of us feel the same about it.
