In case you haven't seen it, check out the effort by GeoGarage to overlay NOAA charts on Google Maps. You can zoom in, switch from map to satellite view, etc. and control the opacity of the charts and markers.

It covers most of the west coast from Alaska to Baja, the Great Lakes, the entire east coast and the Gulf of Mexico. Pretty nice.
 
This is really neat! Thanks for sharing the website. Now for the stupid question...

Does anyone know whether it's possible to overlay our position via GPS? Hate to show off my ignorance, but ya gotta learn somehow...

It would be great, but i think not. I do know a skipper that has collected a large amount of those small one page charts and has put them in a nice folder in plastic. Plots his course with them.

If you ever figure that out, let me know. Nothing is impossible.
