GoPro Hero camera users

Thanks. I got the SanDisk Ultra 32 GB SDHC Class 10 cards. Amazing that this quality (capacity/speed) costs less than 70 cents per GB. Gotta love Moore's law. Memory, along with processor speed and bandwidth, just keeps getting bigger, faster and cheaper. The first 1 GB drive (it actually spun) for my first digital SLR cost more than I can even remember. You're absolutely right about the importance of high write speeds. I've had many a frustrating moment waiting for a buffer to empty.

Cheers

Hi Bruce - I DO recall how much we spent for the first compact flash 1 gig cards: $400 each. I remember thinking, "We're going to save a fortune on film!" I also remember what those early pro digital cameras cost, but it is too painful to talk about.

Keep us posted on how the GoPro works out for you. Have fun!

Best wishes,
Jim

Bruce, Take note that with the ultra cards, the camera may not work flawlessly at the high resolution and high frame rate. The extreme is needed for things like the 4k setting with pro tune turned on. If the camera only operated for a few minutes and then quits, that is probably the issue.

Thanks. Working my way through the manual. Lots of variables. I like this.

And, so far, just playing around, I love the camera's size. It's so easy to move about. I look forward to learning the angles and field of view. I've just begun to learn the workflow in the GoPro editing software. Any comments on that?

Cheers,

Bruce

I got a GoPro Hero 3 Black Edition last year and have used it on our Ranger Tug a few times. i'm not very knowledgeable about cameras but do like to take video and photos when I'm on the boat. they help me get through the long cold winter.

Here's a video from last September when I was out on our local lake. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ze23FCVz_3M The video from the bow of the boat was shot through the GoPro. I had it connected to my iPad 2 via WiFi so I could see the video while I was running the boat. I combined that with video of me yammering that I shot with my iPhone and some photos.

I agree with all the comments about the GoPro. Lots of settings, small buttons, maybe not the best video from a distance, but works great for me to have a camera I can mount outside the boat and control from inside. I'm still tinkering with how to use it but right now I think for my use it will be something I use in conjunction with other sources like my iPhone and other cameras.

Bruce, I use Adobe Premier Elements for editing. It is about $60. I tried the free software from GoPro and I did not like it. It seemed to me to be more for 3-D editing. Like any video editing software, computer power makes it easier and faster (less waiting). To compile time-lapse photos into video, I use QuickTime Pro. I think about $40 or so.

The gopro fanatics forum has a lot of information on editing and workflow for more experienced users...

Jeff - nice job. Cool way to share some history.

TK - do you have to convert the raw GoPro files for export in their editor first, or can you import them directly into your editor?

Thanks,

Bruce

Hello Jeff,

That's a NEAT vid! I especially liked the making of the coffee. We have one of those single cup Keurig's and I like it (at HOME, not on my 21EC). Hmmm, now there's a thought...maybe I could run the Keurig off an inverter...?? Nah...

Fair winds,

Bruce,

I shoot 1080 @ 60 and do not have to do anything prior to dropping into Adobe Premier Elements. They go right in. Note that if you record a long session, the camera breaks the session into several files with a 3 GB size due a file allocation table limitation. This is incidentally nice in that it keeps you from having extra huge files to manipulate. The camera automatically creates the files consecutively and one starts exactly where the other ends. You can drop them into the editor one after another.

With a fresh battery and the battery backpack, I can go about 90 minutes before a battery change is appropriate. With a 64 GB card, you can get about 4h 30m of video at 1080-60. You can get about 9,000 jpg's if you are doing a time lapse.

Enjoy!

Finished my first project with the 3+ Black. I used GoPro Studio which is not feature packed. But it was fun.

It wasn't on the boat, but it was around water.

Interesting timing...

A boating friend knows I used to be in the photography business and sent me a link to a wedding video (friend's daughter's wedding) that was shot with a GoPro...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=p ... c8lxYPdliU

I have no connection with this - just thought it was an example of some very nice editing, video done from a drone, and a great job of putting the sound to it (the rap was from the bride's sister). Obviously, in the right hands, the GoPro is another alternative.

Best wishes,
Jim B.
