I spoke to the mechanic on this issue and we both checked the transmission fluid. It is clear as ever and I noticed no signs of excess temperature or wear. I had it beyond 1,000 rpm for only a very short period before I realized there was an issue and limped the boat back into the slip. My thought was if I'm doing 4 knots at 800 rpm and 4 knots at 2000 rpm, why not take it easy and do it at 800 to be safe. Just like slipping the clutch in an automobile, I'm not sure the first offense blows it for you, but consistent neglect will lead to untimely failure.
