Got extra RPMs, but no extra power

I spoke to the mechanic on this issue and we both checked the transmission fluid. It is clear as ever and I noticed no signs of excess temperature or wear. I had it beyond 1,000 rpm for only a very short period before I realized there was an issue and limped the boat back into the slip. My thought was if I'm doing 4 knots at 800 rpm and 4 knots at 2000 rpm, why not take it easy and do it at 800 to be safe. Just like slipping the clutch in an automobile, I'm not sure the first offense blows it for you, but consistent neglect will lead to untimely failure.

We have a trolling valve on our R-29 Yanmar 6BY. If you are not using it at all, you should periodically disconnect the cable at the trolling valve, and manually move the trolling valve arm up and down several times. Then you can reconnect the cable. This solves the problem of high rpm's and no speed. I do this periodically before I start the engine and have not had any issues since. But I certainly do not do it each time. This was a tip Andrew had suggested and it has worked flawlessly....no issues since the very first one.
