Gps 5000!series antenna

I have a 2011 R 29 ranger tug in about One years time I have had my antenna reciever fail twice,it's mounted about 2 or 3 inches above the radar, garmins installation Manuel says it should be at least three feet from the radar,could this be the reason for the failures?

For what it is worth the GPS antenna on our R27 is mounted on the top of smokestack and therefore more then 5 feet away. Question for you....are you in the practice of running your radar all the time? If you have not been then the five feet issue may not be your problem. If you have been then this could be your problem, either way I'd agree with the Garmin manual and when you replace the antenna maybe look at mounting the new one on the smoke stack.

I do run with radar on most of the time but there's only about 15/20 hours on this antenna.

Mine wnet out too but I blamed it on the lightning strike. Now I am wondering if the radar is the issue. I will put that question to the tech working on my system. A remounting may be in order. Sorry for your pain but thanks for posting the item. I know it will help.

Mine is above the radar. I noticed that the 2012 R27's are on the stack. I wonder if the location was changed because of this potential issue. It would be nice to know before this becomes an issue on my Tug or anyone else with a similar installation.

Ours is mounted just in front of the two horns, I was curious why you couldn't mount the GPS reciever above or below the radar. The radar transmits in a cone pattern around the vertical plane and should never radiate directly above or below. Does the manual show the area of concern to be directly in the radars transmission path?

I don"t know about the patterns of the radar but about ten years ago I purchased a cessna p-210 with radar in reading the Manuels precautions it stated that the radar could ignite a can of oily rags from fifty feet and to never have it on when a line person is directing you to parking as the radar will penetrate their body and be absorbed by their bones possibly causing cancer remember a microwave oven cooks with radar.I think 3 or 4 inches above the radar is to close.

Just as a point of reference:
On my 4212 the GPS antenna is inside of the helm console right behind the 4212, upside down and catywampus in that snakes nest of cables (courtesy of the previous owner) - and works perfectly...
The 740S with internal antenna also works perfectly perched on top of the console - right above said antenna...

When I first got the boat and went looking for the GPS antenna it took me a couple of days to find it - 'gotta fix that I muttered' once I did find it... Then it dawned on me that the boat was sitting on the trailer inside my workshop and the buried and catywampus antenna was working like gang busters - so I never "fixed" it...

Sallison was delivered three to four months after Illusions, both R 27’s. Mike’s is on the mast and mine is on the stack. In that time something had to have happened to make the factory move its location! I make many short trips and rarely use the radar but I have not had problem with either units operation.

The GPS antenae on our R-25 is on the mast directly above the radar. I use the radar all the time, rain or shine. After 1050 hours, no problems.

It is not recommended to mount a GPS antenna or any antenna near a Garmin Marine Radar.

Since the radar is emitting microwave pulses, the GPS antenna may get damaged if mounted within this microwave field. The ideal mounting option for the GPS antenna would be in a position higher than the radar (so it will have an unobstructed view of the sky) and in an area where it will not be in the path of the microwave pulses being emitted by the radar.
