I am the County Surveyor for San Juan County and a Tug owner. Has anyone had problems with their chart plotter with GPS week rollover? This is much like the scare going from 1999 to 2000, except with the way GPS keeps track of the date. My survey grade GPS units are from 2012. An article I read about GPS week rollover, said if the software is newer than 2005, you should have no problems. We are setting out aerial targets for flying the County and I have been collecting coordinates on the targets. April 1 & 3, I had no problems. April 6 was rollover day. April 9th, I spent most of the day traveling around Waldron and Stuart Islands. The next day, I tried to process the data. Three units told me it was August 24, 1999 And the base, said it was January 3, 2010. The days data was lost. I went on line and found a patch for my software. Testing my units today, to see if they are current. I talked with a barge captain this morning, he was aware of the rollover and said his chart plotter was working properly. I have a 2008 tug and wonder, if my chart plotter went back to the 1990's. Maybe this happens only to survey grade GPS units?
