Subject: Hailer added to my R-21EC

Using a STANDARD 220SW 5 Inch ROUND LOUD HAILER - PA HORN I bought from Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000K2MFMY?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=od_aui_detailpages01) it was installed without issues. I mounted it to one side of the searchlight and such that it did not interfere with the SS line when the mast is raised or lowered. I did have to drill 3 small holes in the cabin roof for the self tapping screws to hold the hailer and another smaller hole to run the wire lead through to the Garmin VHF 200 radio immediately below inside the cabin. Everything was properly sealed to keep any errant water out. After allowing the Hailer installation to rest for 2 days I then used hose water to ensure no leaking.... and none was evident. 😀

The Hailer works very well and I can now bark out commends/requests to my dock aids as well as my 1st Mate in the cockpit maybe.

As an aside, this Hailer also allows receive as well as transmit so I can hear sounds/voices from outside via the radio when being shouted at.

Also, another Tugnut who also has installed this Hailer complains about the transmitted sounds when his R-25's engine is running. I will be interested to know if this same problem/issue is apparent for my R-21EC.

It's for protecting the searchlight's casing (the plastic bag is courtesy of the Apple Store 😉 ) from the weather when boat parked on its trailer in my driveway and for added protection when trailering. I will likely keep the plastic wrapping on even when underway as for all of the 6 years I had my R-25 I only used the searchlight once and that was just to know that it worked soon after the boat was delivered to me. The R-25 was kept in the water in a covered slip for 6 years and the searchlight was not protected from the weather and at the end of 6 years the searchlight casing was severely pitted and very blotchy. I could not get rid of the pitting nor the blotches and Capt. Mac said one day to me with a smile... "so much for your covered slip...". Oucheee, that hurt. 😉

You may want to consider something breathable, like Sunbrella; I would think the plastic would trap moisture in there.

Yep... I agree. The plastic is just a stop-gap.

I bought a cover on ebay for about $20.00 that was even made to match the Ranger canvas.

I think I'll get a scrap of Charcoal Tweed Sunbrella canvas from King Marine Canvas and make a cover for the searchlight myself. That will then match my Charcoal Tweed top and full enclosure. Dave from King Marine will be at my house tomorrow at 8:30 am to remedy a sagging top issue, so will discuss this with him then.

Hello Barry,

You said:

Was there any core material in the area of the roof you drilled?

dave

None to my knowledge.... it's solid fiber glass as best I can see.

I assume the reason you've asked is because if water were to get into the core a problem would arise, right ?
