Half way there cruise?

It appears that my schedule is open that weekend! Count me in.

The "water tours" look very, very interesting. I'd love to go through the locks -- never done that and Seattle YC's Opening Day is a couple of months later.

Add me to the list please.

The "Half Way There" cruise is certainly shaping up to be a good size gathering! We are now up to twelve vessels that are tentatively planning to attend.

While no hard plans have been made as to the destination, a number of folks have expressed interest in going through the locks into Lake Union. I would like to suggest then that we move the rendezvous point to Shilshone Marina meeting there on Friday, March 19th. This puts us in close proximity to the locks. On Saturday, March 20th, we can form up our flotilla and head through the locks.

Maureen and I have discovered a nice restaurant at the south end of Lake Union where we could dock and have lunch. We could then all head back through the locks to Shilshone.

There are also docks that are close to the "Armchair Sailor" bookstore as well as the "Fisheries Supply" to anyone in need of a bit of reading or parts.......

It appears that Shilshone is going to be the destination with a cruise on Saturday through the locks. Lunch on Lake Union and then back to Shilshone for the night. That is of course that everyone wants to go back there. Should we consider another destination? Bell Harbor? Elliott Bay? Edmonds? Kingston? Stay on Lake Union? Please post your thoughts!

Hmmmmmmm...

'Kingston' ... would be a good comprimise Rendezvous. We ( to the north) would be blessed by this northern destination consideration !

Pete has suggested that we go to Kingston. I see no issues with this. There appears to be plenty of guest moorage. It is about five miles further north than Shilshone on the western shore. Any thoughts?

We still need to decide whether or not we stay the night on Lake Union or do we come back through the locks and head to some other point? Maybe go around the corner to Elliott Bay or Bell Harbour?
 
My two cents worth on the Half Way Cruise. I've been to Shilshoe overnight a couple of times, but nothing else in the Seattle area. I'd love to go through the locks, but is there anything at the other end other than turning around? I'd be happy at Kingston. I'm flexible (particularly after Happy Hour). The idea of "going somewhere" on a water tour rings my bell, but since I haven't been "anywhere", I'm happy to follow the Leader. It doesn't matter to me where we moor, or whether we do the same place each night. I really, really appreciate all the thought and comments going into this cruise. I look forward to the end result. Thank you all.

So for those of you that have expressed interested in the half-way cruise, who has and has not cruised to Bell Harbor? Bell Harbor is a great place to stay and visit downtown Seattle. You are walking distance to the World Famous Pike Place Market and the Space Needle. There are great restaurants and shops to visit as well. There are so many great places to visit in the Puget Sound it is still open for consideration. So what do you guys think?
 
Well . . . . . . We like all of the ideas floating around. We like Bell Harbor and Kingston. We stayed at Kingston last September and enjoyed it. It is inexpensive to stay there overnight and they have an electric cart you can use free of charge to go to the grocery store. I'm not sure how many boats are coming from the North, but we should think of a central location that would be convenient for everyone. This is my 2 cents worth.

Great! I now have four cents! Two cents from Pete, Two from Nita. Another $2.62 and I can get a gallon of diesel. We have two for Kingston now. Do we hear more???

Nita is right about just being on the water! No place else I would rather be!
 
David --- Since we will not be able to attend, don't count on my 2 cents to get you nearer to a gallon of diesel. Please allow me to suggest what I would consider an interesting weekend.

Call ahead to arrange group moorage at Fisherman's Terminal. (800-426-7818,ex 3395, portseattle.org/fisherman'sterminal )
Friday night go through the locks and procede to Fisherman's Terminal.
Three very good restaurants there.
Saturday tour ship canal and Lake Union. Then head to Kirkland for lunch. Lots of good eateries within walking distance.
Head back to Fisherman's Terminal (or out the locks and tie up at Shilshole)

Any combination of the above should be a good tour, especially for people who are not familiar with this area.

p.s....I love Kingston for moorage but the last time we were there (2years ago) the food selection was very disappointing.
 
I love this idea.

I've never "done" the locks or been to Lake Union, so this would be a great treat and wonderful way to explore a new venue with the Ranger Rendezvous crew.

It is official! Tim and Kim who are coming the furthest, all the way from Gibson BC, have made the final decision! Its the locks and Lake Union. We will nail down where we are overnighting by the first of the year. Maureen and I will be spending the week between Christmas and New Years on Karma. We plan to make a circle route hitting various marinas. We are planning the following as our current "float plan":
25th Arrive at Port Orchard
26th Gig Harbor
27th Des Moines or Tacoma
28th Blake Island
29th Poulsbo
30th Kingston
31st Elliott Bay for the fire works over Seattle
1st Back to Port Orchard

Anyone that would like to hook up with us, your more than welcome. Remember though, all float plans are subject to change due to weather. (Never had to say that much in Vegas.....)
 
In response to the Lake Union cruise, Nita and I are from inside the locks and spend a lot of time without going out. Kirkland is a difficult moorage if it is windy and gets quite rough. Fishermans Wharf has limited moorage which might be a problem, we could perhaps be scattered around which would not be as intimate as desired. We are, however, willing to go with the flow.

Karma Krew - When you're down in the South Sound on the 26th and 27th, you should consider going from Gig over to Tacoma. Dock Street Marina (pictures) in the Thea Foss Waterway is a great moorage, and it's right at the base of the Museum of Glass, and a short walk to plenty of amenities. When you head back up to Blake Island, consider going back around the west side of Vashon and take Colvos Passage, where the current always runs north.

I must appologize for a comment I made the other day that Fisherman's Wharf inside the locks was not a desirable place to plan a Spring cruise. I talked today with the port manager and he told me that they are encouraging groups to choose their facility as a place to go. He also mentioned that he could make available 400 feet of dock space for us. The fee is $.80 a foot which includes their limited power stations (total of 5) with showers and water available. Rafting is permitted in the case where the space permitted is inadequate for all. There would be no reservations or prepayment required. For those who haven't been there, there are good resturants and some shopping available.

Now for the locks. There are many of you, I am sure, who haven't been through. There are two locks, the smaller of which has floats which can be tied to for the trip up to the lake level ( this is the easiest). The large lock requires two fifty foot moorage lines so that they may reach the top and they are manually kept tight. Smaller boats can raft off of the larger ones and require only short moorage lines. The determination of who can raft and who are the worker bees is made by the attendants, who by the way, are very helpful. For those who are by themselves it becomes almost impossible in the big lock to manage the long lines and, in my estimation, must raft. In the small locks it is a bit of a chore but manageable with the help of the attendants. It would be advisable to meet at Shilshole Marina guest dock prior to entering the lock area to review the process.

Nita and I were talking about the March cruise and thought that if anyone would like to venture up the Sammamish River to our house, we would supply some refreshments. This would all depend on the river conditions, such as currents,
but thought we would throw it out to see if anyone were interested.

Is that a Margarita machine I hear calling....... Margarita's, chips, salsa, it sounds like a plan. Maybe we will see you next week...... Not only can a cruise be altered due to weather..... they can be altered due to Margarita's!
