Half way there cruise?

Dave --- Our calendar is slowly coming together. Please put us on the list for the "half way". This will be sort of a nostalgia tour for us. We have spent many years sailing out of Portage Bay, Lake Union, and Shilshole, including hundreds of lock transits. Some good, some bad. I will try to forget the bad runs through the locks and just enjoy myself. It will be nice to make that run and not have to open any bridges. --- Cary

Cary and Pat,
You are on the list!

Regrettably the Laurie Ann will not be able to join you all for the half way cruise. We have plans to take our "land yacht", a 19 ft fiberglass travel trailer on her maiden trip to the Southwest and the deserts of Southern California during the latter part of March . . . We'll be thinking of you all and waiting for pictures on this forum!

Well Drew, I guess you pick the place and the date as people have started to sign up for our "Halfway There Cruise"! We currently have four boats that are saying to count them in.

To bring everyone up to speed, the cruise will be to Bell Harbour in downtown Seattle on March 19th through the 21st. There will be no agenda, no additional cruise, no prizes, no nothin....... just a whole lot of sit around talking boats and having a good time. We could probably arrange to all go to dinner one night at one of the local restaurants. If you have never been to Bell Harbour before, it is in a great setting. Maureen and I spent two nights there this last week. We went to bed looking out the windshield at the downtown skyline and woke up each morning looking out at it again. It is a two block walk to Pikes.

We need ten more boats to make the 14 boat minimum to reserve the entire dock. Don't wait for this one as the space is very limited in Bell Harbour!

Fernie sez:

I hope it''s not too late to sign up, but we I decided we need to go' Please call us at 415-501-2883 to help us get our plans together' We are, leaving Sunday for California and Hawaii for the next 3 weeks, but will be available by phone as always.

Fernie and Sunny, David says "come on down"! No one would ever be too late showing up for a rendezvous (well maybe if you show up a week later.....)

The more the merrier!

I will give you a call tomorrow to discuss the "Halfway There" cruise as well as our "Hard Tops".

Reminder for everyone planning on attending, you will need to call Shilshone Bay Marina on or before March 5th and pay your overnight moorage. Tell them you are with the Ranger Tug Cruise.

Good Morning Crew,
I talked with Shilshole Marina this morning about our up-coming event and told them about the discount coupons I have from the boat show. We discussed the best way to make them available to our group and it was decided that I will drop them off at the Marina and they will give credit to those who tell them thay are with the Ranger Tug group. So when you call them to pay or mail a check deduct $10.00 from your payment and remind them of the coupons. For those who I mailed a coupon to if you pay by phone tell them you have a coupon or include it with your check. Looking forward to seeing you all.

By popular demand, the Margarita machine will be brought out of retirement for it second Ranger Tug appearance at the "Half way there Cruise". I know many of you have been awaiting this good news prior to adding your name, and I am glad to present it.

whoa, stop the boat... margaritas too! We may have to change spring break plans and head your way after all.

Soooooooo......... do I add Zuma to the list????

Remember, everyone that is planning to attend must contact Shilshole Bay Marina by March 3rd and pay for their reservation. As Bob said in his earlier post, he has provided them with $10.00 off gift certificates. Mention these to save ten dollars (use the ten to buy tequila.......)

Tequila has all been bought, just bring yourselves.

Barry & Gill will most likely not make this event either. Gill is requiring some surgery and her recovery is likely to extend into the event's weekend time frame. Sorry to 'bail' out at this point. Of course if things go for the better we will turn up.

Patrick and Gail, shame on you! Letting work interfer with your boating! The boat gods will punish you for this.......

Barry, sorry to hear about Gill, hope all goes well with her surgery!

Sorry the four of you will not be able to make it. Watch for the pictures to be posted.

WHAT I FEARED MOST, IS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN

The small lock will be reopened after being closed for repairs from March 8 until March 19. We lucked out. I misread the first bulletin that came out and made an assumption. But if you get there a day early you will be stuck with the large lock and these instructions will come in handy:

Transiting the large lock just means that a little extra skill and preperation will be needed. The 50 foot lines with a twelve inch loop will be required. Being "on the wall" requires two people working fore and aft lines. The lock person will toss down a light line and you will tie that onto the loop of your line with a slippery clove hitch. They will raise your line and place the loop (working end) over the button above you. You will then wrap your line (bitter end) around your cleat with a figure S, but do not lock it down. Just hang on to your end. As the water rises pull on your end to keep the line tight above you. When the water stops rising, lock the line to your cleat. Be sure that you are tied down good because the lake water is still six to eight inches higher than in the lock. When the doors open, a strong current will be created that could cause you to crash into the boats behind you if your line lets go. Do not untie your lines until the lock master tells you to.

Fortunately most of our boats may not have to go through this procedure. They generally don't put small boats on the wall. The trick is to be extra polite and let bigger boats go into the lock first. Then you will raft to them and let them do all the work. The procedure here is to tie the lines working end to your cleat and hand the line to the other boater. They will place it around their cleat and hand the bitter end back to you to tie down. This way you will always have control of your line.
Note: They will generally never raft you to a commercial boat or a sailboat, only something similar but larger.

Sorry about my earlier screw-up.

Not to worry (but thanks for the tips):

The small locks will be closed for 12 days starting at 7 a.m. March 8 ending 4 p.m. March 19. They'll be open for our Tugnuts lock through adventure.

U.S. Army Corps or Engineer announcement is here.

Cheers

Bruce --- Good thing someone knows how to read. Thanks for the correction. --- Cary

I have some discount coupons for lunch at Chinooks at Fishermans Wharf which I will have on the 20th if anyone is interested.
Bob

Looking forward to seeing everyone in a little more than a week.

Even though the deadline was March 5, Shilshole took my reservation today -- and credited me $10 for the coupon. That means the cost for The Red Ranger is a meager $7.85. What a deal.

Boating season is upon us...and let's welcome it in rousing Ranger Tug fashion.

C'ya soon,

JtheK
