Hello Tugnuts

I am new at this I have a Ranger 27 and I will be cruising around Harstine Island around 9am the tide will be going up and I would like to get info on depths of the water and don't cruise to close just some info to make a safe trip around the island.

I have looked at some charts and the depths (very very inportant ) but still not sure. Any info would help.

Thanks

Hi R&R, the depths shown on your charts are for the mean (average) lower low.
The daily tide cycle has a low and a lower low (and a high and a higher high).

There’s a good explanation of reading charts here.
https://www.boatingmag.com/how-to/how-t ... ical-chart

So you know what to expect for depth at the lower low tide, now you check the local tides for the day in question.

If you don’t have a chartplotter, get a 2019 copy of Ports and Passes. It will give you tide and current info for everywhere you can boat to in the Pacific NW.

There are also tide apps on your phone. For tomorrow, for Hartstine Island, the lower low is 0.5 feet, which means at the lowest point, the water should be at least as deep as the numbers shown on the chart

Thank you Sue.

My favorite speed is slow and my favorite tide is high even though my boat can go 41 mph slow is my friend. What is a good app on my phone that you would recommend. I will look up the suggestions that you gave me.

Thank you

I use app Tide Chart, it’s good fast and graphic tide prediction for any where
Also open the info tab on your garmin plotter
The info includes the choice of tides and currents near you as well as everywhere else

I think tide is high around 7:30 am then ebbing all morning

As far as apps go, I use SailFlow (the paid Pro version) Not only does it have tides, it is also the most accurate wind forecasting info I have found!

I use it on an iPhone so don’t know about availability on Android phones....

Thanks everyone this really helps

My setup on Android:

Tides and currents: Tide Now

Winds and weather: Windy

An amazing combo for the PNW.
