Has anyone used a Trick Davit on their swim platform?

I would like to mount a Trick Davit on the swim platform of my R31 and am wondering if there would be enough clearance above the water. I considered a Sling Davit but would like to keep my rear vision and leave a small lightweight outboard on the Dinghy. The dinghy could be covered and there should be enough room to walk between the transom and the dinghy. I could remove the propane locker since I have an electric stove and oven but it is a great place to store several extra life jackets. I also would have to remove the hand rails but would not need them with the dinghy and the rails in the rear of the boat.

Any thoughts or experience?

Thanks,

Pat

We had the Olsson st275 that works with Rangers davit winch. Allowed more room on the swim step and held our dingy with a 9.9 hp outboard. Less work than the trick but more money

If you are removing your propane locker on the swim step, I would be interested in purchasing it.

@Craig, does the Olsson davit work with the propane box in place? (Looks like it would, but good to confirm.) We would consider one for our C30.

It worked just fine with the propane locker. I made no modifications other than removing the stern rails and reinforced the swim step to hold the weight.

Good to know about the Olsson, thank you! We will consider doing that at next haulout.

My concern with these davit systems is how far you have to reach out to pull them up. My slip neighbor has one and took a spill pulling his dingy.

I have seen an Olsson davit installed on a R29S swimstep, supporting a RIB with an attached 9.9 motor. Davit keeps dinghy at 45° +/-, allows for motor attachment during transport and deployment, and system maintains visibility 4-8 o'clock.

Having a real dinghy that's not mounted above on a sports rack is merely a dream for this R27-OB owner. Don't get me wrong... we love our fastboat... that love does not extend to our kayak dinghy!

Having a davit system that maintains visibility and eliminates the need to attach / detach motor with each outing is huge.

The dinghy/davit setup on 'Dragon Lady' looks like it solves a number of issues. Anyone know what was used? It is prominently featured in the April 2021 video entitled: "Ranger Tugs R-31 S Tour & Walkthrough". It is shown early in the video and then again towards the end. Any thoughts and opinions would be very much appreciated.

Our 2016 R-27 has the Olsson Davits.'
Removed the stern railings.
The dink is a 7'10" rib with a 5 HP Honda.
Only problem with the propane locker is having to move the latches to the outboard on the lpcker instead of the sides.
We did add an electric winch to assist in hauling the boat in since the boat is in charter and makes its easier for the charterers; we won't know their physical capabilities.
OB stays on the dink.

I likewise am in the market for a dinghy/davit combo for an R29S due in April 2022.

Originally i was told by RT to limit weight on the swimstep to 250#, but revised to keep it to as little as possible.

So here's my situation:

I will trailer the boat where the road presents dynamic impact loads (bounces) to the swimstep/transom it doesn't get on the water. I think the swimstep can handle the loads, but I will probably increase bearing plates inside the transom.

I want a 9.9 motor with electric start (100#+) permanently attached to the dinghy (at least I don't want to physically transfer the motor to the motor bracket).

I also want as small of an RIB as possible with a bench seat and steering wheel.

I am considering Weaver style davit with a Sea Wise system. This system would require a camera mounted on the bimini for view of my 4 to 8 from helm chartplotter.

I'm also considering an Olsson davit, where it allows me to see over it from the helm. This system appears to add about 4' to the LOA.

Another davit system I really like is the Presto Marine lift. This system adds roughly 5' to the LOA, as well as added weight, hydraulics, DC power plus battery. I need a bigger boat!

Any suggestions on the choice of dinghy?

It's a lot to think about!

...and here are some recent photos provided by the Olsson folks. Two modifications to the standard kit are needed. 1. Brackets to move the hinges further aft past the fenders, and 2. an 'Auxiliary Pull Post'. $2,795 plus installation at the installer of your choice.

Can't say that I love it.
