Hatch Fan

We are always on the look out for a way to make our boat cooler in the hot summer. I have just received Active Captains latest email and they recommend a fan the is fitted in a hatch and can either bring in air or expel air. We have something like this in our motorhome and it works great. The name of the fan is Caframo Taku Hatch Fan. Defender Marine has the fan on sale for $135 which seems pretty pricey. Does anyone know anything about this fan or does anyone have a similar fan they use in a hatch?

Jim,

I was a full time R.V. guy for 9 yrs and appreciate your question. We had Fantastic Fans in out Alpenlite 5th wheel and I would never be without one. The price does not sound excessive. If you go cheap here you may get a fan that will not last and make excessive noise. We turned on the fan to "exhaust" and opened only one window at the opposite end of the R.V. which made a breeze and took the place of an air conditioner at times.

Fantastic Fans are great fans and their customer service can't be beat.

I saw that fan while at Defender. I was very impressed with the operation and construction. However, I did not buy it since I have not yet felt I needed one and it would have been an impulse purchase.

Can not speak to a Caframo vent fan but we do have experience with a wall mounted Caframo unit. We mounted a multi directional, multi speed and with a auto timer Caframo unit in our R27 stateroom. The unit is extremely quiet, good looking and seems to be of high quality.....for what it is worth.

I use a 12volt Caframo fan mounted on a circular base. Underway I keep it on the port shelf adjacent to the starboard helm station. At night I fold down the port dinette seat and place the fan on the nearly flat seat surface with the fan tilted forward facing the forward berth. It moves an incredible amount of air, pivots up and down, and is a quality product.
