Cape Dory 28 Sloop
Vessel Name
Pu'uhonua
We are currently Cape Dory 28 sailors on the Chesapeake Bay. Looking to make the common, "it's that time" switch to something like a Ranger 25. We would like something that we can venture out of the Bay on from time to time, say up the coast to Long Island Sound or to Nantucket Sound, spending time around the Cape. Can someone comment on the suitability/handling of the R25 in the likely conditions? Would small craft advisories on Nantucket Sound (not that uncommon in summer SW winds), be an obstacle? Not talking venturing out in gales, needless to say, but more seas than we have on the Bay, e.g., and the windage. Our CD displaces 9000 lbs.

Check the archives. Several threads on this.
Basically, the boat can take more than most of us are willing

We have an R-27. We have been out during small craft advisories and I am here to tell the stories. The boat can handle more than you. My rule of thumb is blowing 15 knots or less and our ride is ok. Of course wind direction and body of water make a difference, but my rule has never disappointed me. We have been out at 25 to 30 Knots but the ride is uncomfortable and we were glad when we came to port to relax.
