So we were out last night and smelt the same burning boat smell that we had when our last boat was destroyed. Well needless to say it kind of freaked us out a bit. I did find the culprit it was one of the Hella Courtesy lights on the back of the boat. The breaker ticked off, so that was good. Everything is/was fine other than about 3 inches of wire and the light (pictured below) Anyone else seen this? Recalls I missed? Just not a big fan of things burning on a boat.

Hello,

It looks like it got water inside and caused it to short out, no recalls that I am aware of and you can order a new replacement from Richard at parts@rangertugs.com, let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you,

Thanks for the initial post... something to be aware of if not concerned about. I have quite a few of these courtesy lights around the boat, as I suspect we all do. Not one is a "dry" installation!

Some of these lights are in an extreme "wet" zone, so consequently, being sealed at the manufacturer, and as long as there is no damage by the user, or by RT during installation, I would expect the light to die before the fixture.

Are these the lights that are used when trailering? Is there a separate breaker for these? I never trailer so if there is a way to disconnect I'll take it.

Thanks

Are those two photos the backside and front side of the light fixture ? Where exactly on the boat was this fixture located ?

In addition, what sleuthing was done prior to finding the culprit ?

a couple of months back someone posted about using O rings to replace the degraded gaskets on these lights. Got a bag from amazon and they work great!

These are completely water tight sealed lights, no gaskets. They are the ones found on the stern of the boat (R27 Classic and others). They come on with the other "courtesy" lights in the cockpit, swim step and around the outside of the boat. The breaker for me was above the switch at the helm.
