Helm seat flaking

My wife, Pat, has been in touch with the factory. So far we have learned that they use a new seat now but have material left over to make a replacement for a 2010 seat. Have not heard about cost yet.

I dunno why I would want another made of the same material . . .

Has anyone sought input from Ranger Tugs? Seems like premature failure. So far, so good with my boat.

This is a GOOD point. It seems quality marine grade vinyl seating material should last more than 4-6 years. But that's just me. Sailrite.com has loads of info on marine vinyls and they are supposed to be among the MOST durable fabrics available. Durability figures are expressed in THOUSANDS of hours of weather resistance (NA for INSIDE the pilot house seating) and abrasion resistance ("double rub" ) of over 30,000! That's more "rubs" (sliding into/out of) than a 2008 helmseat with heavy usage would see.

In any case, checking with Ranger Factory to find out WHAT grade/type/brand vinyl was used will guide those replacing what NOT TO GET the next time around.

4-6 years? I am not at the end of year 3 and I am getting the flaking.

In your case I would say that is clearly defective vinyl.

I am pretty sure Ranger Tugs does their own upholstery, based on what I saw at the Monroe plant last year...

Quick Update : We are waiting on response from factory regarding price. The upholstery is now deteriorating at an accelerated pace on the helm seat and both bolsters.

Well, here we are three weeks later and the situation is deteriorating rapidly. We have heard back from the factory and are searching for alternatives. We await an estimate by a local reupholsterer . This is the first time I have been disappointed in Ranger Tug quality and durability. The problems I have had in the past like the battery charging issues are industry wide but just about everyone from car manufacturers to boat makers have seat coverings figured out. What are other folks doing to replace or recover their seats and bolsters? Has anyone used an aftermarket seat they are happy with? What material is used in new Rangers? I know it is different from my 2010.

In my opinion, if you get a new seat from the factory, it will be the same grade mt'l and do the same thing after a few seasons. I just bought a 2012 R27 and I plan on applying a protective type of wax to the vinyl or maybe put a sunbrella cover over it. Vinyl is not very UV friendly. Given a choice, I would have it redone with a better grade of vinyl.

Good lookin seat Barry 😉

Sifting back through the posts I can tell if you went with the factory or a local shop. Results look good though

Hello Barry,

Your seat looks GREAT!

WHO did the reupholstery? Do you know with WHAT it was covered? (like Naugahyde, Stamoid, Allsport, etc) It's good to know what works.

The "helm seat re-hab" was done by Krisha Plauche', the Principal Designer at Onboard Interiors in Marblehead, MA. They have done most of the modifications that you see in my album.

I believe she used leather and also added more foam padding.
