We were headed to Sucia today from Bellingham. Passed Matia and realized the dock at Matia was empty! First time in a decade we have seen the dock and/or 2 mooring bouys available there.
Great loop hiking trail through old growth forests on Matia. No water but one pair of pit toilets. Dock is modern and can hold (in theory) up to four boats. Bigger sailboats limit it to just two boats. The dock is short!
On our hike today we saw a bald eagle, great blue heron, numerous swallows and other small birds. Two little garter snakes sunning on the hiking path slithered out of our way as we passed. Black and yellow “banana” type slugs crossed the path as well.
A seal swam in with inlet with an Orca swimming by right outside the bay.
Amazing sunset from the dock!
If you can find a spot on Matia it’sworth the stop.

Agree, it’s a wonderful island with old growth trees and hiking trail that traverses across and along the shore. We anchored overnight in the bay there last August when it was full, apparently no mooring buoys there at that time.
