holding tank charcoal filter

I've been looking to buy a 28 Cutwwater and could not locate a charcoal filter on the holding tank vent. While I could locate the drains for pump out and OB discharge via mascerator, I could not see the vent hose though I know there must be one. What am I missing. Other boats I"ve owned had charcoal filters, normally sitting on tip of the holding tank connected to the vent hose line.

The vent hose is under the gunwales close to the fuel filler. You can access it bu removing the inspection cover in the inwale in that location. The bad news is that you'll have to cut the line and make your own canister from PVC pipe or whatever and buy some fiberglass and aquarium charcoal or similar to fill it with...

Right, charcoal filter is not installed by the factory on these boats. Lots of folks add them. Or convert to freshwater flush.

Yes, you can make your own or do what many, myself included, did and buy https://bigorangefilter.com/products/bi ... ter-bundle. It’s easy to install. Photos in our album under modifications. It does have relief valve incorporated. Having a plugged filter and collapsing a tank when pumping out is very rare but not unknown. Maybe I was just lazy and glad someone else did the work.

Is tank collapse a real problem?
If the holding tank got to the point of significant negative pressure, wouldn't it simply suck air directly through the toilet?

I wondered that as well. The best answer I found was that, if the valve on the toilet is in the Lock position, it can create an airlock. If it’s not then it seems that pull through the flapper is possible though the volume of air coming in may not balance that great big suction going out. I don’t want to take the chance so, although I have the Big Orange, I unscrew the access at the top of the tank when I pump out. That allows me to hose out the inside of the tank as well. It’s a crappie job but someone has to do it!

My experience is it will suck air through the toilet. The only issue is if using the toilet during a pump out you have to hold one cheek up a bit.
