If you are located in a position where overboard discharge of the holding tank is permissible, does a Ranger 31 have a Y valve that needs to be turned before the overboard breaker switch is pushed on? If yes,, where is it?

Crawl all the way forward in the quarter berth (cave). You'll find a removable panel at the end held in place by velcro. It's behind there.

Cheers,

Bruce

On the R27 the overboard discharge assembly was an option, not sure on the R31 but if you don't find one this may be your answer.

Manufacturer reports the y valve is, indeed, at the forward end of the "cave". I haven't looked there yet.

yes it is there on my R31S, but it is not a Y valve just a ball valve. Utilized it 10 miles off long beach

Did an RV Park dump of the holding tank in the cleanout behind my house yesterday. I have the model and part number of the Dishwasher drain hose that with little trimming fits right in the thru hull and does not need a person to hold it in place for discharge. At the same time ran a little water into the holding tank and turned on the maserator pump and let her rip, the pump sounds different when it gets down to just water, It cleaned it out and ran clear at the last. 😀 very happy no pump out at lake marina.

I like to know the model and part number of the Dishwasher drain hose. Thanks.

Home Depot universal dishwasher drain hose Everbuilt brand 6' has rubber expanded ends cut off largest and trim 3/4 end so inserts into thru hull holds great. 🙂

Thanks Desertug...Ray

Hi Desertug, can you expand on your RV discharge method? I'm looking to do the same and was considering replacing the thru hull with a threaded to attach a hose. You seem to have found a simpler solution that works without replacing the thru hull.

Sound Hound,

If you don’t trust the friction fit method in the thru hull and don’t want to replace the thru hull you can add a “Y” valve after the macerator with a line with a quick connect fitting. From that fitting you can then run a hose to a dump station using the macerator as a pump. That is what we have on our boat. We use it to clean out the tank while the boat is in our garage.

On our 2019 R-29CB our value is under the the mattress on the starboard side. There is a drop in panel you just lift up and there is the value.

Why did they make this so convenient?
I cannot find it on my 2014 CB31 maybe it was not done then?

All the way forward in the mid berth is a removable panel. Open that panel and you should see a ball valve with a hose leading overboard. By law in the U.S. that valve must be secured to prevent use within 3 nautical miles of land. Many people just secure it with zip ties.

Thanks Brad.
When you say mid-berth are you speaking of under dining table (makes into berth) or the fore berth (Stateroom)?
I am not at boat but know I have no panels under dining mid boat area.
I will look under the forward stateroom tonight when at boat under the mattress etc.
Thanks for help!

The mid berth is sometimes called the cave. It's the small "room" under the dinette. On the R31 the second toilet is there. If you crawl all the way forward there is an access panel to the overboard discharge valve, and the backside of the shower valve. In the deck on my 2012 R29 are some lift off hatches to access storage in the bilge (a good place to keep beverages cool). I also have a panel on the centerline to access the space below the main cabin walkway.

On my 2014 Ranger 31 there is no Y valve found behind the panel in the "cave", just a lever which turns it off (which is required by law in Michigan to be off and then plastic tied in the off position). If the lever is placed in the on position and you have the tank pumped by a Michigan Municipal Marina, where they pump until nothing further is pumped and they then add water in the waste pump and pump out again and then you talk them into adding water and pumping it out again, you are not going to be able to get them to rinse it with water again. Then say you add three gallons of 100 % anti-freeze and then pump out the holding tank after the boat is out of the water, one will find nothing by **** with the anti-freeze in it. Now the mascerator is full of **** filled water with a holding tank full of maybe inches of **** with anti-freeze in it. Is this what you call winterizing the mascerator and holding tank? How do you now clean out the mascerator?

In Michigan must one physically disable the mascerator by doing something more than just tying the lever in the off position. What must be done in Michigan and how is it done?

Barling: To be extra cautious about securing the black water tank lever in the closed position you can put a cable and lock onto the lever. In all the years we’ve been boating I’ve not had a boarding where I was asked to show anyone the discharge lever to see if it is closed and or secured. If you have a Coast Guard Safety inspection this is one thing they do check. I’m not saying you should not secure the lever because if I did sure enough you’d get boarded and checked. I am saying it doesn’t not happen as often as one would think.
