Hey folks, I want to install a holding tank vent filter on my 2016 R27 classic. The tank is in the very stern with good access through the rear bench. I've got one of those standard tube filters with mounting brackets.

Problem #1 is it's a pretty short vent tube run from the top of the tank to the vent at the top of the transom. Tough to fit the filter in there unless I add a bunch more vent line and mount it horizontal or at an angle.

Problem #2 is the only surfaces I see to mount the bracket to are single wall fiberglass. I'd rather not drill that and have screw heads exposed in visible areas.

So ... how about it fellow R27 Classic owners? Any of you install a vent filter, and if so how'd you do it?

Thanks

Hi Toki,

You are correct. It is a short run. I think the only thing you need to be careful of is not to create a low spot that can collect liquid and potentially block the vent. I made my own out of PVC pipe per the instructions on this site. I made it shorter in order to make it fit better. I just zip tied mine to the holding tank pump out line next to it. No bracket or drilling required. Another option would be to tie it to the washdown line. I don’t think it needs a bracket. It is not heavy and the stiff lines support it vertically. If yours is longer you may have to tie it at an angle.

I put in a Big Orange Filter. You can see the installation in our album, modifications/page 2. Great performance. Easy refill. I believe the 27 is the same layout as the 25C.

I want to echo Curt’s comments. See the description for the easy to make filter on earlier posts. You can size it so that it fits in the short run available to you and zip tie it in place. It weighs nothing. A few bucks and an afternoon of work will pay off big time in the smell. I did this in both our 27 classic and our 29CB. It’s easy.

Thanks for the advice folks.

Yes, a home made filter sized better for the application sounds like a good plan. Also that Big Orange filter does look like a better fit with input and output coming off the top than the cylindrical unit.

But ... for now I have the filter I bought and cartridges are universal so I think I'll proceed down this path. I agree, that filter is pretty light so securing it in place could be zip ties rather than drilling and screws.

Absolutely no negative thoughts about building your own filter! I'd have felt a real sense of achievement if I'd done it. Just a couple of reasons I went with Big Orange:

Capacity. This thing has a lot of capacity! I don't want to be changing the filter medium very often.
Mounting. I know I could customize my own to match but then why bother when someone else has done all the work.
I'm lazy. This thing was $150 Canadian or about @115 US delivered to my door. I could spend a day doing something else.

The final reason:

The built-in by-pass valve. I know I can unscrew the inspection cap on the top of the tank (and I have remembered to do that....so far) but if I forget and collapse the holding tank when I go to pump out that is going to be a real crappy situation.

Ok gang, and I apologize if this is slightly off topic, but is it recommended to open the inspection cap on the tank prior to pump out? I’ve never done this. I’d hate to have you know what hit the fan.

Cheers,
Mark

I installed the homemade filter in 2013. The tank has been pumped out countless times at numerous facilities from MA -Fl. I have never opened a tank cap or had any other problems.

If your filter is not overly clogged you shouldn't have a problem. Maybe it's only a 10 or 20% chance of happening, maybe lower. I don't know the odds but it has happened. http://www.boatered.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=146498. I guess I just think it's prudent to unscrew the inspection port, with or without a filter.
