I was "perusing" the owners manual on the head. I was looking at the plumbing set up. I have the salt water, auto flush arrangement. Am I seeing this correctly? If I throw that diverter valve, the toilet is bypassed. That would mean, if that valve is overboard, if you flush the toilet, the water goes overboard. BUT you do not empty the holding tank?

What I'm asking is this:
If I wanted to flush a bunch of fresh water thru the toilet, while the boat is in the water, I can use that "Y" valve without emptying the holding tank into the bay.

No, the valve only determines what happens to the contents of the holding tank. The flushing of the toilet goes into the holding tank regardless of the position of the valve.

With the valve in the overboard position, it requires the macerator pump switched on to pump overboard.

What guy doesn't read on the head....... 😛

Some boats are set up where the "Y" valve does determine where the toilet sends the waste. One position is to the holding tank and the other is overboard. To dump the holding tank overboard you must run the macerator pump and have that thru-hull open This is independent of the "Y" valve. Overboard for the "Y" valve has a separate thru-hull. With this set-up you can pump water thru the toilet without impacting the holding tank. My boat had a lock on the "Y" valve and another lock on the Macerator pump. This required an intention and knowledge to pump any waste overboard. I liked this system although it did have 3 thru-hulls associated with the overall system. 1) toilet intake 2) "Y" valve outlet 3) macerator pump outlet

The Rangers and Cutwaters are all plumbed to go directly in to the black water tank. The Y valve is just used to give the owner the option to pump overboard if the vessel Is outside of US waters.
