The horn on my 2012 Ranger 25SC just stopped working. Anyt thoughts?

My experience on boats is the first thing to break on a boat is the fuel gauge the second is the horn. If you have access to some long 12 volt leads you could connect directly to the horn terminals (if you can get to them) to determine if it is the horn or the wiring to the horn. I have long leads around with battery clamps as it is often easier to run power independent of the boat to save a lot of groveling time with your body in positions it was never intended to go. Turn off house power first.

See Ongarro horn repair under Ranger Factory Bulletins on the home page.
Probably only needs to have the contacts cleaned, fairly common problem.

I have had my horn not work if the boat is not running , will honk once then like it is dying. The first thought would be low batteries , but that's not it. It is obviously an electrical thing but works fine when under way. You may want to try it when the boat is running if you have not already.. My $.02

Our horn became wimpy and intermittent. I cleaned the points as suggested somewhere in the forum but didn't improve the situation. My boat maintenance guy pointed out that the stock horn on the Ranger isn't sealed so that over the long run our adverse environment messes it up. He thought the five years we got wasn't unusual. Our replacement horn is "sealed" so that longevity and reliablity should be improved. It was more expensive though.

I don't use the horn a lot but..... when you need it, it better work.

I saw a Ranger that made small sunbrella covers that tied onto the front of the horns to keep the water out.

OK. Tried what the manufacturer suggested to one horn. Still doesn't work. Should I be doing both horns?
Could I replace the one I tried with a new horn, just slicing the existing electrical wires?

Usually, none of my attempts to fix anything works.....

Mine quit also.....I sprayed canned air into the trumpet (carefully at first) while tapping gently (at first) on the diahragm part of the horn. it worked.

We stretch a clear plastic bag over the two trumpets and secure it with a ball shock cord. Because it is almost invisable we have at times left it on the horns by mistake, however the sound appears to be as loud either way. My original thought was for it to keep the splattered bugs out during freeway speeds and prevent mud wasps from building their nests deep inside during storage. We have found that it also keeps the towing 65 mph rain out and if you are expecting a lot of salt spray it can do that too.

The manufacturers service bulletin works. I 'supervised' while Mike and Brian were the horn repair work party on a number of boats. All horns were working afterwards.
I can't imagine how they would have managed without me

$12 from Amazon buys a 'spare' that works fine. Small, so I keep the original for looks.

I did the fix twice on my horns over the past few years but over the winter had new trumpets installed. It's now louder than ever.

See my detailed post on horn on ask Ranger factory.
