Is there a magnesium anode in our hot water heater that requires maintenance? I just checked the heater in my Arctic Fox camper - and it is almost completely gone in less than two years of limited use - probably because I fill the tank with softened water. I checked the Seaward web site (I think that's what we have installed in our Ranger Tug ) - they say the anode is an option on their heaters, but I don't know if we have them installed.

Has anyone checked, changed or installed one or do I need to wait 'till Andrew comes home?

Thanks
Mac

Andrew is gonna be so tired when he gets home, he won't be able to help for awhile... I'd drop a note to his designated helper, see his first post when he announced his pending nuptials. And I believe it's a water heater, not a "hot water heater". If it was hot, you wouldn't need one. (sorry, just a pet peeve of mine, kinda like "sea trails" instead of "sea trials".... 🙂

I think anode would be easy to see and accessible from the front of the heater.

I checked Island Ranger today- couldn't find an anode. And Andrew confirmed - we don't have 'em installed on our water heaters.

Good catch - I've always called it a hot water heater and not just a water heater. Does seem redundant. But, lets see,.. technically it does heat hot water and make it hotter, so can I call it a hot water maker? 🙂

I agree with Mac, I call my water heater at home a "hot water heater", it keeps the hot water hot, just like on the boat. Call it what you want but don't pick on us 🙂.

I knew those Ranger folks were smart!

WE GOT RIDE OF OUR HOT WATER HEATER AND REPLACED IT WITH JUST A REGULAR WATER HEATER.. FOUND THAT WE DIDN'T NEED THE REDUNDANCY  [UNLIKE RAYMARINE ELECTRONICS] PS MAC,, I LOST YOUR CARD AND HAVE A GIFT FOR YOU .... SEND ME YOUR ADDRESS VIA PM,,, STEVE 😀

I am new to this forum. I just completed the purchase of a R27 today. To answer the heater question, the anode is an option used when the water has sufficient concentrations of dissolved salt to cause corrosion. To install the drain is removed and replaced with an anode. So the heater has either a drain or an anode -to determine which, look at the heater on the end which has the hose connections.

<---wishes he had a HOT water heater on the Red Ranger.

Sadly, that's one of the comforts you learn to live without when cruising in the R-21 EC.
