House Batteries Replacement

Hello JeffreyAC77,

From the factory we would have installed group 31 AGM's as an option. Not knowing if you're the original owner or not these very well may have been replaced from what we installed at the factory.

Thanks,
-Kenny

I am not the original owner and the HOUSE batteries are 6 volt and now weak. I purchased 12V AGM to replace them. The engine and thruster batteries are both AGM already.

Are there any specific challenges to be aware of other than putting the new AGM House batteries in parallel?

thanks,

Actually, AGM's were standard so yes those would have been installed on your boat.

Thanks Kenny. The HOUSE batteries on the boat currently and being replaced are wet cell 6 volt.

In replacing them with 12V AGM, are there any specific challenges I should be aware of.

We will put the 4 new AGM House batteries in parallel.

I just replaced the four house batteries on our 31CB. The cables and jumpers are sometimes hard to twist and fit on the battery terminals. Since I was changing the configuration a bit, I kept different length bolts on hand to accommodate the differing number of lugs on each terminal. Since you will probably be using stainless steel bolts and nuts you want to coat the threads with something to prevent galling, which can literally weld the bolt and nut together so that you have to cut it off when you want to remove it again. I used molybdenum disulfide (“moly”) grease. Also, I would recommend wrapping your wrenches with rubber or electrical tape. I didn’t do that, went into the job telling myself I had to be careful, and still ended up creating fireworks and vaporizing the tip of an open end wrench when it hit a terminal I couldn’t see because of the constricted space. It was inches from my head. *That* woke me up!

John
