How "fast" does it go??

Hello all,

I am new to the Ranger Tug community with the purchase of a 2010 R25. It is equipped with the Yanmar 150 and a generator. I am wondering what I should expect as my optimum cruising speed and what would be a reasonable top speed for my boat? The boat is lightly loaded now. I also have a slight nose down attitude when tied to the dock. Is that normal? Again, there is very little stored on the boat at this time. It is equipped with a 16.5 lb anchor 25 ft of chain and 150 ft of rope in the locker up front. Thanks in advance.

For my previous 2010 R25 Classic with the Yanmar 150HP - A good cruising speed would be between 8 to 12 kts, and WOT should give you at least 14-15 kts.

My 2012 R-25SC with the Yanmar 150 will cruise comfortably around 9 - 10 mph. WOT absolute top speed has been 19.9 mph on flat (fresh) water very lightly loaded with fuel and w/o water. Enjoy your new Tug. They are real eye catchers everywhere you go.

I recently purchased a 2010 R25 SC with 540 hours on a YANMAR 4BY2-150 HP. I have been driving it in pretty much all conditions (calm seas to 6 -8 feet swells in 20-25 kts beam wind).

In calm sea, I usually cruise at 8-10 kts (2.5 - 3.5 GPH) and was able to squeeze close to 16 kts at WOT (6.5 GPH). Depending on the swell period (peak to peak), I usually engage the trim tabs (even at slow speed) to keep the bow into the sea and make the ride more comfortable. I observed very little changes in GPH at all speeds.

As a reference, I'm berthed in Esquimalt, BC, Canada and have only cruise in the Strait of Juan de Fuca (Eastern Entrance - Victoria waterfront to Race Rocks) and HARO Strait (on the Canadian side...).

During our recent WOT test two weeks ago, Our Journey, with a Yanmar 4BY2-150 engine, reached 14.8 knots (16.8 MPH) at 3,960 rpm burning 8.0 GPH. At the max continuous rpm of 3,200 we are getting
about 11-12 mph. Normal cruising speed at 2,750 rpm gives about 9-10 mph and 3.5 GPH. Slow cruise at 2,400 rpm gives 7-8 mph at 2.5 GPH. All these numbers are at full cruising weight with the boat fully loaded.

I have a R27 with a 200 hp Volvo. I find I either cruise at RPM of less than 2000 or I bump it straight up to 3250.

I’m either going 7 knots or I’m going 13-14. The fuel consumption per nautical mile between 2000 to 3250 is almost the same. Why burn up as much fuel doing 9.5 kn when you can go 14 kn for the same cost.
