How important is it to use Volvo's oil for Volvo's engine?

Subject: How important is it to use Volvo's oil for Volvo's engine?

I have a Volvo Penta D4 300HP engine that will be requiring its first oil/filter change at the 200 hrs or 12 months. Just how important is it to use Volvo's oil for this task ? Is it a warranty issue or what ?

This engine requires 12 liters of oil (minus a bit to account for the residual oil always left in the sump after the old oil pumped out).

I ask as finding a place that sells the Volvo oil is not as if you can go down to local auto store and get the Volvo branded oil.

My understanding is that provided the oil you use meets all of the specs of the Volvo oil, it will be fine with regard to warranty issues.

That being said, I used Volvo oil just to eliminate any potential question if any issues came up. I got my Volvo oil (and filters, etc) direct from Richard in Parts at RT. I don't feel that I paid premium for using that source. I picked it up in Kent, so I didn't need to pay shipping either.

Hi Barry, I was told by a Volvo Authorized service center to use Delo 400. I think it will say on the bottle that it meets all Volvo specs. I buy it at Walmart.

FWIW, I used Delo 15-40 in my Volvo KAD44 for 18 years and 6500 hours. No problem, warranty or otherwise.

We are just returning from our trip up the inside passage all the way to Skagway. I had to have the 400 hr service done in Juno. I carried all the parts aboard but did not want to carry all that oil. The only authorized Volvo service center in those parts said he always uses Delo 15-40 for Volvo. Concerned about warranty issues, I checked with Tim (those guys at the factory are wonderful about responding when there is a need) and he said no problem, Delo 15-40 would be fine. (On the other hand, it is apparently extremely important not to mix non-compatible coolant with the supplied Volvo coolant.)
