Hi folks,

With some advice from Ivan I was able to get the GPS from the Garmin to the Standard Horizon Radio on my R-23. The process is not difficult but locating the correct wires turned out to be a bit of a chore.

I wrote the process up with photos such that it ought to be simple enough for everyone to follow.

You can see the process at https://www.nwesterly.com/home/2018/5/1 ... garmin-gps

If you happen to see anything incorrect or misspelled let me know and it will be corrected ;-)

Fun and safe boating to you and I hope to See You On The Water (SYOTW)

Now get the radio to send position requests lag and long to the plotter. You should be able to use the DSC function on the radio and the MMSI function to get their position. The garmin plotter will show an icon with their location.

Thank-you Jim! It took me a couple of hours to get all the connections and routing the wire. Once I setup the Garmin it works!!!!

I had an extra pair of hands and that really helped. Not sure how you did it single handedly.

Woo Hoo Cool Mint! Awesome! Glad you got it connected.

Jim

I do. Send me your email address and I will try to send it from my phone. I am off to Alaska Sunday and things get difficult after that.

All the info is in the blog and you could screenshot it for a pdf maybe

I followed Jim's directions and successfully made this connection. I did it single handed, wasn't that bad. I made the 3 connections to the VHF, feed them down, then did the remaining connections below. I did shine a flashlight up from the head toward the VHF, which gave me a clue as to where to point the wires down from above. They were right there when I got below. I used 3' of wire and I think 2' might just have been a little short.
My fuse block had a NMEA 2000 wire where I thought I'd find the GPS wire. Took me a minute to locate the GPS wire on the other side of the fuse block. That was really my only "oh crap" moment.
Now I have Thunderstorms with Tornado warnings. Just got home in time.
Thanks Jim!!

Hey Tony, I'm glad you got it connected. It is helpful that the wire for the GPS is labeled or I would never have found it either.

Next up for me, once I get back from Alaska, is to rework the dinghy motor mount. I don't think that I want it on the swim step rail.

Jim,
The timeliness of this article could not have been better. I just took possession of a used 2018 R-23 and I realized just yesterday that the connection of the Garmin to GX1600 had not been made. I tackled the project today. Your instructions saved me many hours of work. Thanks.

Great George, and congrats on your boat! We still love ours and will use it quite a bit this year.

Next up, installing Vesper AIS. I hope to have this completed in the next month or so.

Jim

Anyone still have these instructions?

Breathing new life into this thread. I need to make this VHF-GPS connection on my 2016 R27. The link for the instructions at the top of this thread is dead. Anyone know how to get those instructions?

Thanks

The instructions should be either in the Garmin or radio installation. It should be pretty easy. The VHF would have to connect to the NEMA 2000 backbone. You will have to add a "T" connection and then be sure to reinstall the end terminator.
