How to drain all antifreeze from a Volvo d4 diesel engine.

According to the Volvo Penta Service and Maintenance Manual:

  • Open the expansion tank cap.
  • Open the drain point - The drain point for the D4 is located on the left side of the engine between the fuel filter and oil dipstick.
  • Drain the coolant from all the lowest points.
  • Notice - If there are heating elements connected to the engine coolant system, these elements must be drained in connection with replacement of the engine coolant.

My mechanic changed my D4 coolant over the summer.
He drained the old stuff of course… and then he flushed the whole system with fresh water as well… the “system” includes the auto salon heat & hot water heat in the RT 31.
When done, he added the new stuff.
Note, my engine is a 2013 model. The coolant part # changed at some point. Double check that you are NOT using up some extra saved old coolant left from the last coolant change.
The old coolant when mixed with the latest approved Volvo coolant “gels” when mixed together. Not good.
So def use 100% of the new coolant part #. FYI
