I don't see literature on the cutwater website showing the hull drawings for these two models. I'm keen to understand the differences below the water line.

I've been beaten about (but safe) in my Cutwater 28 and see comments that the outboard powered boats are prone to more bashing in heavier seas, (ignoring the engine weight placement for a moment) Im interested in understanding how the hulls are different between the two boats as I consider a new boat.

ah there is a line drawing in the owners manual!

This looks like from the chine forward the hulls look the same. clearly very different for the back half of the hull. As a result off plane should they be any different in heavier seas? (ignoring fuel efficiency of the different power plants at lower speeds

would the factory or a dealer care to comment about the hull characteristics of these two models?

Gavin, I can't give the design details but the biggest differences is Plaining hull or semi displacement hull. Look at the bottom of your C28, look at the bottom of an outboard powered Cutwater or Ranger. What do you see?

The C30 inboard has an engine mounted low in the hull placing engine weight there. There is a pocket formed in the bottom for this installation. This design requires a lot of power to get the boat to run at "planing speeds" because the boat is not planing. The advantage of this design is very good economy at hull speeds and a very good ride at 20 kts.

The C32 outboard has a true planing hull with 600 hp and capable of 40+KTS. The engine weight is aft placing the heaviest components of the boat there. This is great for performance, the bow is light and the hull lifts. A boat that is lifted out of the water or on top of the water (planing) running bow light will ride differently than a boat that is cruising in the water (semi displacing hull)

If there was a 600hp Volvo installed in the C30 you would not see close to the performance numbers of the C32.

C30 and C32 hulls are not apples to apples. If you want to cruise 30 + mph C32. If you want to cruise 20+ C30

I have never been cruising in either C30 or C32. I have talked to owners of both. I have never heard an inboard owner mention or comment on the boats ride being poor. I can't make that statement about the outboard version. I'm making this statement on their opinions not mine.

Hopefully a factory member can give you a full description of the differences Pro's and Con's.

Hey there Gavin,

I think Brian nailed it perfectly. Both boats (in my opinion) ride very nicely but you have to decide on what is more important to you. Just as Brian stated, the diesel will definitely win the fuel numbers at the lower speeds. The 32 is really designed to cruise at 30MPH and up on plane. It doesn't mean you can't run the boat at the slower speeds but the economy would be worse than a diesel. I have always said that an outboard will feel very similar to an inboard running at the slower speeds. Running at 40 knots you will definitely feel more than running at 20 knots. My suggestion is to go and run both of them to decide what will work best for you!

Hope it works out!
