Finishing out my spares for the R23 and wondering if there is any specific type of hydraulic fluid that is spec'd for the steering or is there simply "Hydraulic Fluid"?

Looking to the group for the answer, thanks.

Hello Jim,

You need to use Uflex hydraulic fluid. It is less money than the rest of the stuff out there and what we use from when the boat is new. There are some I am sure you could mix but I always try to keep things the same unless you were going to switch it all out.

Huh. Both those (Teleflex and Uflex)hydraulic fluid are MIL-5606h. This has been superseded by MIL-83282 fluid which has a higher flashpoint. Teleflex uses no red dye, making it harder to spot a leak.

Both of these MIL spec fluids can be purchased at 1/4 of the cost of the Teleflex and Uflex fluid. Either buy on-line or at your local airport at the aircraft service place.

I would tend to go with Andrew on this as we are only talking about small amounts for the steering system. I prefer not to mix fluids and while the $19 was a bit steep, I know it is the same as from the factory.

Andrew: What is the shelf life for Uflex ? From my experience the fluid level stays pretty good for years of use and have to wonder if having Uflex sitting on the shelf for a number of years will it degrade significantly to the point it should be discarded ?
