If anyone can explained to me what happened that would be great.

I was just pulling out of my slip in our R-29 when message on my auto pilot flashed "hydraulic pump failure". The steering for a few seconds locked up but then everything was ok. We were going very slow - 3 kts when this happened.

Any comments on what happened. Everything seemed to work ok for the rest of our trip.

Thanks

First thing I would do is check the fluid. If it's low, it would lock up from air in the system. Get out the owners manual and see what the troubleshooting section says. Keep us posted, please.

Did you have your autopilot on by mistake while in the harbor? That might not be the problem but if it was active would explain the message.

Hello NewWest,

The only way this can happen is if the autopilot was engaged and if the rudder is hard over in one direction. Is there any chance the autopilot was engaged by accident? Say by the autopilot remote maybe? I've heard of this happening before is why I ask.

Thanks,
-Kenny

Thanks everyone for the relies. And yes my autopilot was on while I was slowing heading out from the harbour - and I think my rudder was hard over.

I will remember not to engage my autopilot until i am well underway.

Thanks again everyone
