Hi
Wife got I pad from my daughter in law. Any one have any navigation programs applications suggestions for PNW areas.
We are not big computer users , the free ones I looked at appear Mickey mouse and difficult to use.

Thanks Bob

Depending on what model the iPad is, there are great options. Look up the following in the App Store:

Navionics (my preference) (US & Canada)
Garmin Blue Chart (I have it, see above)
Navimatics (Charts & Tides)

None of these are free, and all are worth the cost. I also bought a holder from RAM that allows quick removal or changing from the helm to the co-pilot area.

Any of the above will get you going. Seems that folks with Garmin chartplotters prefer the Garmin Blue Chart, and those of us with Raymarine or other chartplotters that use Navionics chips prefer that app.

For about 1/6 the cost of a Navionics Platinum chip, I can have EVERY chart for the US & Canada on the iPad. Of course, it doesn't integrate with your other stuff, but I find it an outstanding back-up and WAY easy to trip plan.

Best wishes,
Jim B.

Just for reference, when I mentioned the model above, you need to have an iPad that has 3G or 4G capability, NOT wifi only, unless you add a separate GPS unit to the iPad.

Here is a link to a blog post, after a lengthy forum discussion...

Like Jim B we use the Navionics app on our iPad 2 model. We've used this app for navigations on many inland body's of water over the last two years and can attest to its accuracy. We use our built in Garmin 5212 for most navigation but the Navionics is our go to source for places (Lake Powell, Flaming Gorge, etc) where we do not have built in chartplotting for. The iPad 2 and above have a gps built into them and you DO NOT need an internet signal when you use them however you do need internet when you download any charting area. The app also came into good use while in the Desolation Sound for Tide and Current information. Although this info is available on the built in Garmin I could use the iPad I too research this info while not on the boat, or without having to boot up the Garmin while at dock or on the hook.

Thanks
I down loaded both products and will see what the results are like.

It will help to know what generation your iPad is: 1st gen, iPad 2, New iPad, iPad 4. IF you can connect your iPad directly to the internet without using wifi, you have a 3g or 4g iPad. Now, just because you can connect directly, it doesn't mean you have to. The wifi only models are/were about $100 to $130 less expensive than the models with direct connectivity. Only the models with direct connectivity (3g/4g) have the GPS chip.

We have a 1st generation iPad that my wife uses. The wifi only model was released first; we intentionally waited until the 3g model was available in order to have the GPS chip (part of the data receiver chip). Works great with the Navionics app; not enough memory to use the Garmin Bluechart app. I use an iPad Mini that fits perfect next to my Raymarine chartplotter at the helm.

A quick search turned up this post:

It has the model numbers listed - your model number is on the back of the iPad. That should specifically answer which model you have.

Best wishes,
Jim B.

In other words, they've got your number

I'm using ForeFlight on the Ipad for flying. Haven't put any marine apps on it yet.
Mine is a Gen 3 WiFi unit. I added the Bad Elf gps plug in. Works like gangbusters.

I have an IPad which is Wi Fi only.. Have both Garmin and Navionics charts! Personally I prefer Navionics but the Garmin is good also.. Use Garmin GPS with Bluetooth... Works great!!!

Still use regular Garmin GPS but these are good backups and have neat local info... If I am with Wi Fi range or hookup my Hotspot can get Weather over chart on IPad..

Good Luck..
