Hi

I have an ice-maker on my R31 located under the steps to the CB. Sadly I don’t use it, so thinking of replacing with a 12V Fridge/Freezer. Or another alternative is to finish the opening and have a space to be able to put a 12V Cooler. Wondered if anyone has an opinion on this, or done something similar.

Cheers

A 12 volt cooler would have the advantage of being able to pull out and take ashore.

My 31 came with a fridge/freezer...which is affectionally called the "beer fridge".

My Cutwater 30 also came with the ice maker. I had it replaced last year with fridge, also mainly used for beverages 🙂

Hi

I think I may have dismissed the idea of a cooler...most of a decent size are 40lbs+. That plus drinks and food would sort of make it not very portable.

With regard to the fridges(s) you have in place do you know the make and model (or alternatively, approx. dimensions)

Cheers

Mine fit into the same spot the ice maker was with no mods. The invoice has this on it:
Nova Kool WR1600DC 1.3cuft Fridge, White

I pulled my ice maker-out, to repair light bulb and saw another electrical connection laying there , is this the wiring for the standard refrigerator?

The boats are usually wired for optional things but you should confirm with someone at Fluid Motion. Ice makers vs cockpit refrigerator is like comparing anchors, bottom paint etc. I guess it depends on your needs. We’ve had both n prefer the additional refrigerator.

I placed a Dometic refrig/freezer under the dinette on the outboard side in my R27 2011. It can be used as a freezer or refrigerator, or both. When in the freezer mode, you may keep icecream really well frozen. I think mine is the 55 qt and I have to take the top off the table to remove it. But it came in really handy when I had a Nova problem, or when I wish to defrost the refrig and keep frozen stuff, frozen.

We use our icemaker a lot on our 31.
On long trips it will make enough for cooler.
We share with friends that have a Rossborough 24 with limited cold storage.
I highly recommend one, but maybe up north it is not as important.

How do you prevent from getting one big block of ice. What happened in our use, the ice maker is power on Shore power or generator. So underway we would not power it, so it would melt to some degree, back on shore power and it would freeze again.

We love the ice maker freezer. Had it rewired to feed off of the galley outlets so it operates while underway without running the generator. Also keep frozen items on the bottom of the bucket.
