Ideal motor size for Dingy

When we bought our used 2016 R-27, it was equipped with an Achilles 7'10" rib and 5 HP Honda.
Best of all a pair or Olsson davits to lift and lower it.
We did add an electric winch to make the job easier.
The dinghy rides horizontally with the motor attached.
I still have excellent vision aft.

We are just completing the outfitting of our new 29CB. We are getting the Highfieild C290 dingy (10 feet). I want the biggest possible motor for speed recognizing
1. Dingy will be on clip on davits (standard Ranger Tug davits)
2. Motor will be stored on stern rail in cockpit
3. We will have to lift the motor from the railing on to the dingy from the swim platform and also the reverse from dingy to railing.

I know the answer relies on my confidence and physical strength. I am 57 and average fitness.

How have people figured out what to do here?

The biggest motor for the 290 is 15 hp which will push that boat nicely. I have a friend that has that boat with a 9.9 on it and it planes with 2 adults. He has a hydraulic lift so lifting the engine is not an issue. I had a Gala270 which is a 9' rib on my C26 and carried a 15Hp (2stroke) on a bracket in the cockpit. The 15 hp 2 stroke was 80 lbs. I could lift it and carry it but putting it on the Rib and taking it off was a PIA especially if the anchorage was at all disturbed. I installed a Garhauer lifting davit which worked great.

This made lifting the engine off the rib and storing it in the cockpit doable. The unfortunate component of this size Rib and motorized with a C26 Cutwater was the added weight on the stern did effect performance especially in a disturbed following sea. I changed things up and sold the Rib and purchased a 270 Gala high pressure air floor which was 50 lbs lighter and a 6 hp Suzuki which is 30 lbs lighter. The reduction of 80 lbs sitting aft makes a big difference on the C26. I do miss that 270 Rib with the 15 hp. It was a fun toy. My wife and I would go out on Lake Michigan on a calm day and cruise at 18Kts and then throttle up to 23Kts and fly across the water. When your running in a little boat like that it feels like 50mph!!! I under stand you wanting the bigger motor. you can do a lot more exploring and cover a lot more area and have fun doing it.



With the lighter dingy and lighter motor I no longer use the lifting motor davit and will be selling it. Anyone interested it this type of davit I will sell it for 270.00 plus shipping. I did install two stainless steel cleats on the boom to aid in the control of the control of the block and tackle.
