After 4 decades on sailboats, I am learning to love my 2016 R27. Lots of detailing to talk about later, but now. She is at permanent berth on eastern Nebraska's largest lake. The situation: two weeks ago when I went down for the weekend, arrived to my dismay w/o cabin key and FOB. The marina office was given a spare key on launching. Great! I got into the cabin and started engine. Had a fine weekend until I realized I shouldn't have been able to start her w/o the FOB. It must have been left on board and my wife locked up previous visit. Searched high and low, in and out, over and under but no FOB on board. Any ideas?

Are you sure you locked it previously with the FOB? You only need the FOB if you locked it with the FOB previously.

Once you are ready to turn the "engine" off, you hold the FOB under the ignition area until the little green light is off. Then the engine is truly shut off. Hope this helps.

Not sure how other boats work but this is how my ignition system works.

If the ignition is locked, wave the fob in front of the switch. This unlocks the ignition and turns it on. (There is one beep and the green light comes on).

Press the start/stop button to start the engine.

If the ignition is already unlocked you do not need the fob. Push the ignition switch to turn on the ignition (green light comes on), then push the start button to start.

To stop the engine push the start/stop button.

To turn off the ignition push the ignition button (green light goes out). The engine is fully shut off at this point.

To lock the ignition wave the fob near the switch until it beeps (two beeps).

You may combine these last two steps by swiping the fob over the switch after the engine has been turned off. This will turn off the ignition and lock it.

Or you can leave it unlocked and it will start and run without the fob as you discovered!

Three separate systems. Lock. Ignition. Start.

Mine works this exact way also. I do find that just holding the FOB in front of the ignition without waving it works best on my boat.

Thanks, Everyone. I think I have never shut down the engine with the FOB. Just assumed it did when on board. I'm off to the lake today and will check things out using my wife's FOB. Assume new FOBs are available if I don't find mine. Still hopeful.

Yes, new fobs are available.

As long as you have at least one that works, you can program the new fob yourself. For security, you can also delete from memory the one you lost just in case someone else finds it. Find both procedures in the D4 operators manual. Caution! DO NOT accidentally delete the one working fob you have! If you do, it requires a visit to Volvo to reprogram the system!

As far as I know you cannot shut down your engine with the fob. You can only use it to turn the ignition system on or off and lock or unlock the ignition. Not sure if you can turn the ignition off with the engine running but let me know if it works for you. Learn something new every day!
