Which way does the impeller turn on cummins QSD 2.0 ? I took the old one out and forgot to look which way it was in ( Dumb Me)

Do you still have the old impeller to gauge the angle? If not I’ve always heard that if you do not know that once the new impeller is inserted and sealed up (lubricated appropriately) that it will find its proper alignment upon starting the engine.

The manual only talks about vane flex direction for the Jabsco pump. The exploded view of the pump in the manual (to show vane flex direction) would indicate the impellor would turn CLOCKWISE in the pump housing if you are LOOKING AT THE REAR OF THE PUMP with the cover off. On the other brand of pump, it simply says put in the impellor and put the cover on. This would imply the vanes are self-setting, but it simply does not address this.

For what it is worth, the manual states you should not lube the impellor with a petroleum product. Don't know if this includes Vaseline or not, which is what I always used to use. I use straight dish washing detergent on this one, and it seems to work fine as a lubricant. Vegetable oil should also work.

If this is not clear let me know and I will try to send you that section of the manual.

Pretty sure clockwise. I have also been told that even if installed in the wrong direction they will bend to the right direction once in operation.

Thanks for all the information. I just bought my 2009 ranger 25 late last fall and now am getting it ready for spring

I agree with all that impeller orientation is not that important in the event that the newly installed impeller/raw water pump is put into service shortly after install. The new impeller vanes will not have time for lubricant ( soap or Glycerine) to dry up for the 30 second dry run before the raw water reaches the pump. Also the impeller vanes don't have time to take a reverse set. The vanes will roll over into the right orientation with out harm. If you are installing the impeller and don't plan on using the pump in a short time frame after installation I would recommend installing in the correct orientation. Actually I always install impellers in the correct engine rotation orientation. A standard rotation marine engine turns clockwise when looking at the front of the engine. The impeller is installed turning the same direction as the engine. Standard rotation engine - The pump impeller turns clock wise when viewed from the pump face plate. Install in this orientation.
