A friend who has the 110 Yanmar on another make of boat tells me that he replaces the impeller every year. Is that recommended for the Ranger 20 with the Yanmar 110.

Tom, no matter what is recommended, at the very least, I'd carry a spare, probably comes in a kit with the gaskets, et al. Don't forget tools too!

I got my spare impeller for the 110 from my local Yanmar dealer in Everett a while ago. I'm sure the engine manual has the recommendation, but it is on the boat. I thought it said just to inspect it annually. That's what I've been doing, it has been fine, but it is time to check again (a little over 800 engine hours - still going strong!)

When we bought our Albin several years ago it had less than 500 hours on the Yanmar engine; during the seatrial the overtemp alarm came on every time I tried to run at max rpm. It took the broker's yard over a week to get all of the pieces of an old impeller(s) out of the heat exchanger and the rest of the cooling system. After that, I changed impellers very year.

As time passes the material tends to harden and causes the blades to lose their shape and to become less efficient. Heat from the engine compartment will also hasten the hardening process. The next step is for the blades to start falling apart, clogging the system and losing their efficiency. Then, over temp.

Plus $30 for a new impeller and gasket(s) is reasonable. Plus $500 is weird, surely it included more than the impeller and gasket(s). I ordered spare impellers, drive belts, filters and seals/gaskets from Wefings when we purchased our new R-21 EC in Jan. It's bad enough when something causes one to lose a day on the water, it becomes worse if one is left stranded because one isn't carrying a spare.

How did you find the part # and know this will work with the Cummins QSD? New to this, I am reluctant to use non-Cummins parts, though their prices are robbery.

It would be so great to get a really complete spare parts list together for the R-25 with the Cummins QSD .....

For the Yanmar engine, the marine mechanics say replace it every year and I believe the manufacturer says the same thing. Small insurance to prevent a huge problem.
