I'm trying to evaluate a few options for providing more outside lounging space for my cutwater 28. generally for use at anchor; not underway

some options I am considering

1. hammock across the cockpit - do we think those stainless bars could take the weight? Im not sure what the backing plates are like in the gunwale for those bars?
2. regular sun lounger in the cockpit
3. with the flip seat facing backward; create a level platform between the cockpit rail and the swimstep rails; nice and easy to rolloff the back! 🙂
4. move the solar panel to one side and create a platform on the roof rails; seems rather easy to roll off!
5. create a custom frame that sits over the two foredeck hatches and creates a large sun pad area between the windscreen and the anchor roller. this is my favorite idea. I was even thinking a simple way to implement this would be a custom shaped foam mattress that has removable cutouts for the hatches and the slowly curving foredeck. this is then lashed to the lifelines. could be two pieces for easy stowage.

anybody got any other ideas?
what do you do?

Move to Florida

🙂 I still need somewhere to lay! 🙂

I like the idea of a hammock for sleeping as well as sun soak. I am sure that the cleats could take the weight with some custom rope solution. Has anyone tried this? It would beat the heck out of dinette bed with the right hammock.

cleats are a good idea. I bought this hammock and will test this weekend!

I think I will look into fabricating a frame for an inflatable pad for the bow area as well.

1. to smooth out the bumps of the hatches etc.
2. to level it out a little more

I am really interested on what you think. I would consider trying this while at anchor overnight with a thumbs up.

Thanks

For the price, how could you go wrong?

Maybe a folding cot. Maybe a blow up mattress for the cockpit. Maybe get a king sized blow up mattress and put in the water and tie it off behind the boat. You would have your own floating island! Maybe make an appointment with the doctor now for skin cancer check up every year. Maybe take some vitamin D as a substitute for lack of sunlight in the mean time.

My wife of 52 years has been a sunbather and if I suggested that she not do that, then I'd never have been able to own a boat. To her boating is sunbathing, a good book and an ice cold diet Pepsi. Fortunately, she's a natural tanner. As for me, I'm in long sleeved shirts, big brimmed hats and long pants all of the time...my Scottish roots. And we do both have annual skin checks as should everyone.

Layout places on boats are an important topic to me, so I'll continue to monitor of good ideas. Right now, we are thinking that a tag along inflatable dinghy will be just right for her.

tried out the hammock in the cockpit today. its a bit long for the width. when strapped between the two stern seats, the reversal seat gets in the way.

I tried a new config by going from the handle above the icebox on port, to the stern rail by the swimstep door (diagonal across cockpit) and this worked pretty well. totally dominates the cockpit but super comfy.

(this is a cutwater so not sure how this would work on a tug)

I'd definitely going to try and build a frame for the bow that levels out the bumps and slope and then put down an inflatable mattress.

oh and Harry I'm with you! its all about making the wife super happy

WOW we always keep well covered when out in the sun after having a few melanomas remove we don't take any chances with out lives 🙂
Cheers Peter B
