Do you have a recommendation for where to locate an inline charcoal filter for waste tank vent line? Since vent line is behind galley and through hull, I presume perhaps pulling out the line behind the shelves? If so, what is "easiest" access? Trying to be nice to slip neighbors since we vent directly into their cockpit area where the are usually socializing....

You can make one fairly cheaply. I'm well into my second season with the same charcoal and still odor free.
Here's how to build one. viewtopic.php?f=5&t=3921&p=36709&hilit=Waste+filter#p36709
I can't help with the installation on a 31.

I installed a Big Orange. It holds a huge amount of charcoal, I got three years out of the first fill.

It also has a vacuum relief valve to allow unrestricted air intake if a pumpout station has a high volume pump.

Thanks all. I am all set for the filter part. Just looking for guidance on an R-31 where to put it and if it is behind the galley - how best to get at it...

Corey, I put my "big orange" filter under the galley. I removed the draws beside the refrigerator, and was able to bond the filter assembly to the inner fiberglass structure (not the hull) behind the draws. This is a good location as it is near the tank vent. I am pretty thin, so it was doable for me as I was halfway into the cabinet to do it. Might be tough for others.

Maybe not the most easily accessible spot, but I located mine under fridge. Once fridge is pulled/slid out (4 screws), the vent line is easily accessed for installation/service. Because service is not frequent (so far), this seems to works for me.

I was just trying to figure out where to put the filter. Thanks for the advice.

Corey:

Install the filter as high and as close to the outside vent as possible. The reason for this is to help prevent any backwash into the filter when your holding tank is full and or you're in lumpy seas.

Thanks. For the great advice. I will install and post a picture of the success or failure.

I finished installing the big orange under the fridge tonight. It was easier than I thought. It took me less than 10 minutes to get the fridge out. I haven't figured out how to post photos here but if anyone wants some let me know.

I have been ordered by my co captain to install a filter to stop tank odor. I was surprised to learn that the hull vent is located on the starboard side as all of our odor seems to be coming in thru the port side cabin window even when the overboard discharge valve is closed. Any idea why this would be happening?

LineDoctor, I would appreciate pics. I almost installed behind the galley drawers yesterday but decided to wait and obtain another length of vent hose to put in. It is a tight space to squeeze in to work in the drawer space

I speak from a very disgusting yet first hand experience: use caution on these inline filters as Jim Favors pointed out. Because, the filter can be the cause of a clog, which causes a plug which will stop air from returning into the holding tank (remember, this is the reason for the vent line), and when the tank cannot vent, the holding tank becomes pressurized. Your imagination can fill in the rest when pump-out time happens.

When you have experienced the fountain and spent two days cleaning out the mess, experiencing the "aroma" every time the head is used is no longer a bad thing. My admiral is no longer complaining. You can read about our "Hudson River Sh_t Show" on our website: www.andiamo-ranger29.com

After experiencing my own "poopocalypse" or "crapageddon" I installed a home made charcoal filter (see earlier post) just below the vent. I just spliced it into the existing vent line. Works like a charm!

Has anyone experience installing an inline filter in a Cutwater? I have a C28 with an odour issue.
Thanks,

I was going to do it before we sold our 28. Much easier than on my R29. You can access the line by taking out the storage bin under the flip around cockpit seat.

On the R29 and R31 the best way to get to the vent line is to pull out the refrigerator, this allows easy access to the vent.
On the 26 and 28 Cutwater the vent is accessed in the aft deck port side hatch. he vent is located next to the pump out.
please feel free to contact me

Thanks, I put mine under the refrigerator this morning. What a lot of empty space under there. The only difficult part was getting the plastic covers off the screw holes in the fridge.
