Lisa and I are going to be doing some in field testing of a satellite GPS tracker made by Delorme called inReach. We write for BoatU.S. and they approached us to try the product out. I bring this up because we'll be heading off for a three week trailering boating trip to and on the Tennessee River with our R27 and will be activating the device for testing, so we can get results of how it works. If you're interested in seeing how the device tracks us, how a message is received or sent or how accurate it is I can set you up to receive emails notices, etc while we're on our trip. To read more about the device go to http://www.inReachdelorme.com We are not selling these and we have no vested interest except learning how they might be used in our boating travels. If after you've checked the web sight out and have an interest in tracking our whereabouts send us a PM.

Jim,

What were your observations in trying out the DeLorme InReach?

Hey Dale,
I have Spot. We have used it for a few years. The minimum annual subscription is $99.00. With that you can set up your own standard message to go to several people via e- mail. When we travel and come to our nightly stop I just press the message button and it sends out an e-mail saying we are okay and it gives our latitude and longitude plotted on a map and satellite image. It is "spot on". The emergency procedure is to press the emergency button and all your contacts get an emergency message and local (near where you are located) authorities are notified and given your location. There are additional services available like continual tracking and such. To date we have been satisfied with the service and feel like with the way we cruise this works for us.

Hi Dale:

The Delorme inReach works much the same as the Spot that Mike described. I've heard more positive things about the Spot but that may be because they have more in service with the boaters we come into contact with. With that said one should consider the product (either one) based on the type of boating they do....off shore, remote areas where you might not have cell service/internet and for piece of mind.

I used the Delorme InReach on my long trip last summer. The device was great - reliable, and easy to use. I chose this device because it provides two - way communication, and runs off of the Iridium satellite network. I even used it to ask Andrew a question about my battery charger from Desolation Sound!

You do need to do a certain amount of set up once you have an account, and will need access to a computer to do that.
