I have a 2023 R23 with a kicker motor mount that was installed at the factory as an option.

I have new Yamaha 25HP with a 20" shaft and electric start.

Would like to rig up the 25HP and tie it to the 200HP so that I can use the autopilot.

Can you tell me what steps I need to take to do this?

I just want to know what's involved before I take it to the local boat shop here in Brookings, Oregon.

Hello,

Unfortunately, we don't use a tie bar when connecting our kickers on the R23 models. We use remote steering units (links below); one is called the Panther steering system, and the other is a Tailfin. Both work great and easy to install.

Tailfin: https://powrtran.com/products/tailfin/

Panther: https://panthermarineproducts.com/electro-steer-and-steering/

Thank you,

Jared

Jared,

Before I go out and purchase a new Steering System for my kicker motor can you tell me why Ranger Tugs does not use a tie bar to connect the two engines?

If the reason is safety please educate me.

Hi Curt,

The 200 Yamaha on the Ranger 23 is positioned in such a way that it does not align optimally with the kicker motor. The distance and angles involved make it impractical to connect the two engines with a tie bar. Instead, we prefer to use a remote steering system, which allows easier install and use.

Best Regards,

Jared
