Installing a Portland Pudgy on R-25

I installed my PP today onto my swim platform in about 2 hours. My son assisted which made it much easier. I'm very pleased with it and the Sunset yellow is a real eye catcher as well as being ultimately very visible when in open waters. Several people who strolled by as we installed the PP were very interested and were very impressed with all the PP's features.

The custom Weaver davits were a dream to install and I like very much that the two davits attached to the PP are easily removed via a cable secured/retained pin and can be placed into the storage area when not in use. Leaving them installed otherwise would present a danger IMO.

Stepping from the swim platform into the PP was very safe and the PP felt solid under foot and very stable.

I would highly recommend the PP to any boater with a beam of 8.5 feet or more.

If any are interested in photos I can certainly post some.

Can it remain mounted while trailering?

I have no clue. I don't trailer my R-25. A good question though and maybe others can say what the trailering regulations are.

I've trailered Island Ranger with the Pudgy on her davits. It worked fine.

I have the Pudgy (white) on the Weaver Davits at the swim step on my 2010 R25 with a block and tackle to pull it up. Ranger did the install at the factory and its great! Might want to ask Andrew Custis how it was for his team to install it. The standoffs and block and tackle work great, and its easy to manage.

The one issue is the potential loss of the standoffs. When you want to detach the standoffs, they can potentially fall into the water! A leash of some sort would be good. I have successfully sailed on and off the swim step davits, and even my 9 year old can get the Pudgy onto the davit, so its a good system. The visibility of the Pudgy is great compared with larger dingys too!

I'd sure like to hear more about the sailing kit on the Pudgy. Do all the sailing parts stow on & in the dinghy itself, or do you have to find a place on the Ranger to store stuff? (Which stuff doesn't stay on board?) And is there any issue attaching a motor on the transom (after attaching the rudder pinions - do they get in the way?) ?

Thanks,
Mac

Mac: The definitive answers to your questions would best be answered by David Hulbert, Pres Portland Pudgy Inc at 207-761-2428 (office) or his cell at 207-712-4027.

I've had many chats with David at all times of the day via his Cell #. He always answers and loves to answer PP type questions and talk about any of your requirements & concerns.

AFAIK -- all the sailing gear stows in the PP itself. I do not know the answer to your motor question wrt rudder pinions getting in the way. David will certainly know about this.

I am wanting to use the block and tackle approach for lifting and lower my PP. Can you give me the details on your factory setup ? To make it easy for myself the following info would be useful.

1. Block specification )model, part #, Est. cost would be very useful)
2. Amount of line used
3. Location of where the block is installed and how it's attached to the boat etc
4. The location of the line attachment on the PP
5. Any pictures of the overall setup would be extremely useful

I know Capt. Mac (Island Ranger) uses a block and tackle for his PP and I've only seen it one time during my "day on the water with Capt. Mac" shortly after we bought our R-25.

Thanks in advance for any info you care to share.
