Installing Midship Pull-Up Cleats on 2010 R-25

I'm considering installing midship Pull-Up Cleats on my 2010 R-25. For the installation to be sound and secure I would need to have access to the underside of the sidewalks.

On the galley side I'm thinking this access might be possible if I remove the starboard panels at the rear of the under counter storage areas. I do see that there are round hatches in some so I'm thinking this might be possible.

On the port side, I'm a little unsure how to access the underneath of the port sidewalk. I can see there's a gap between the cabin wall under the dinette table and the hull. The question becomes how do I access the underneath of the sidewalk. Would I have to cut a hole in the cabin wall under the dinette table at the midship location allowing me access to where I would install the Pull-Up Cleat.

I have eyed the same with the same idea. Two solutions come to mind.

Elegant:
Thinking that maybe a pair of stainless steel 'squeeze' plates.
One under the cleat above the sidewalk and a second under the sidewalk.
When bolted they will squeeze the sidewalk between them spreading the load.
The one going underneath would be put down through a slit/oblong-hole that will be covered by the top plate. It will have the nuts already fixed to it.
The plate on top (larger) will cover the access hole.
You will need to be creative with some fishing line and some metal L or U tool to lower the under plate through the access opening and then pull it back up in line with the mounting bolt holes and ready to have the upper plate, cleat, bolts dropped over them.

Brute force:
Cut access holes through the inside of the cabin liner.

Be aware the elegant option requires a cleat that can have a bolt(s) dropped through from above.
Otherwise it is back the the universal solution to everything - brute force (holes) :mrgreen:

There's also the issue of how to properly plumb the cleat to collect any water seepage down to the bilge... :roll:

When dealing with a leak in my fresh water system i had a square hole cut in the back of my galley cabinet, covered with a removable piece of starboard. If I had to have access in the cave, I'd probably do the same thing.

Jeff: With that square hole cut out can one get access to the underneath of the sidewalk above ?

Barry, the universal answer to all things nautical that leak is bedding the part into 4200.
Actually, bedding compound would be better though.
After looking at a picture of a pull up cleat my elegant solution is out the window, or the port as the case may be.

And yes, being that tidy is really annoying to us messy types.

Yes Barry, the hole is about 12 by 12 so there's plenty of room for arms, hands, lights, mirrors, etc. to reach up or down.

I think I've found another way to access the starboard side sidewalk's underbelly... There's a fresh water port with a pressure regulator just about where I would want to install the Pull-Up cleat. I'm wondering if I remove the plastic surround that holds this regulator in place will there be enough room for my hand to pass through to use a ratchet/socket to secure the nuts of the Pull-Up cleat.

Also, if water does seep through the Pull-Up cleat (and I'm sure it will) will the water find its way to the bilge for the bilge pump to take care of, or will it collect somewhere else that would be undesirable and unseen ?

FYI...
At Cap Sante this past weekend I learned from Ranger Tugs that an additional modification for adding a midship cleat on the R-25 and R-27 is in the making. It's called a Toe Rail. It is bolted through the side walk and hangs outboard. With this installed a pop-up cleat can easily be mounted on it. I was told to call Richard at the Ranger Tugs Parts Dept in about a month to get more info and possibly be able to order it for my boat.

I called Richard at Ranger Tug's Part Dept. today to enquire about the Toe Rail progress. He spoke with John Livingston and returned my call to tell me that this product is in the making and should be available at the Seattle Boat Show in Jan 2014.
