Looking at a 2013 R-21EC that has factory a/c, but no inverter. My understanding is that if I want to run a/c while underway I would need to have an inverter to run the a/c pump. Can anyone recommend a particular inverter that would suit this purpose?

Thanks,

First you will have to read on the ac unit what up current it draws. Then you will have to determine the number of hours you expect to run the ac while on battery power. I suspect you will need to add several batteries to run the ac unit for any significant time. You may be able to run the ac while running the engine under way. In most cases ac is not possible without a generator that is found on the bigger boats.

It is the factory a/c and I only want to run it while underway - but I've been told that while the A/C unit itself is 12v, the pump for the water heat exchanger runs on 110 and thus requires an inverter (or shore power) to operate. I was hoping someone here would know what the current draw is, since I don't have access to the boat yet.

i've been currently involved in some upgrading and general messing around with my e21 AC unit. I think you will find that the whole system runs on 110 V power, not just the pump. The AC unit draws around 400 watts and the pump another 100. A 1000 watt inverter should be fine. HOWEVER, as part of my modifications I bought a new modified sine wave inverter. It runs the AC compressor and blower fine, but appears not to run the pump. I haven't quite figured out what is going on, but it appears that the pump may require a true sine wave inverter. I suggest just to be safe you buy a true sine wave unit.
