RE Ranger 31: Is there any reason why the inverter cannot be run for an extended period while under way? I assume the engine will charge the batteries enough to offset what the inverter uses. Is there a risk of inverter damage?

I am contemplating how to keep the ice maker functional while cruising.

I always do.... As a matter of fact it actually works better with the engine running. It's the only way I run the microwave off the inverter....the one time we used the micro off the inverter without the engine running, we blew an internal fuse in the micro!

I routinely run a portable ice maker powered by the inverter while underway. I have also used a slow cooker crock pot underway, nice to have a meal ready when you arrive at your destination! The engine alternator will easily handle your ice maker.

The portable ice maker does not draw much power (about 10A from the battery when making ice) so I usually leave it running when we anchor for 4-5 hours during a day outing. Your built in ice maker is larger and likely draws more power. We also use the microwave, a blender, and a drip coffeemaker while anchored without running the engine. Never had a fuse issue.

Hi , no there is no reason that your inverter can not be left on while underway.
The way the inverter is wired it will only operate your microwave and outlets only
