Finally found a suitable, sturdy IPod mount that mounts to glove box lid that can still be closed while IPad in mount. Available on Amazon.

Very cool.... nice. 🙂

I often run Garmin Blue Charts on my Ipad that I have on the helm leaning against the forward window. The location is good but it is not secure in rough seas. Do you think this mount would work on the teak overhead? One concern would be it swinging around with the boat movement. Some of the reviews say that tightening the swivel locations is a constant hassle.
The glove box location is not an option for me.

Brian,

I used a RAM mount for an iPad Mini. You could get one for the iPad. Very secure and it holds a charge cord so when you insert the iPad it is connected to power.
I got it at GPS City, it came as a package with arm and ball plates. The bottom of the GPS City page has pictures of my installation including a USB power outlet I installed inside the helm console.

Hi Brian,

Here is a simple iPad mount I made for holding the iPad on the dash. The two slots are each a different angle to give it some flexibility in viewing angle. It has held in most rough seas except for in one case when we really got tossed. That could have been resolved if I had used a thicker board and deeper slots which is what I would recommend if you made something like this.
