iPad used as second chart plotter

Need some guidance - Talk to me like I am a 5 year old!

I also want some redundancy and I like the benefits that I have heard so far regarding the use of ipads.

I have an ipod mini laying around house that one of the grown children left it behind.

I just ordered the Bad elf.

I play around with active captain on my PC, but don't know how to integrated it with my 7612.

I also have read that there is overall support for navionics.

Questions:
Is Navionics an app? Is that what it is called?
Is it used with Active Captain? If so, how?

Once I get this stuff working the way I want on my Macbook Air and/or ipad, how do I get Active Captain to be on my chartplotter?

I can fix an engine, but my tech skills are lacking... Any help is appreciated.

Best,
Bobby

This may be easier to understand than my explanation.

Brian,

Thank you so much! That is a very informative video and explains a lot.

I just ordered a 32 gb card to update my 7612. Will the upgrade allow me to use the self-plotting fearture (can't remember what that is called)?

I have an ipad mini, but because it cannot run an operating system above 9.3.5, It can't run navionics. Folks should be aware of this if they want to go the ipad route. I'm now trying to locate an appropriate ipad.

I'm sure I will have more questions as I get deeper into this.

Thanks again!
Best,
Bobby

Got my ipad now with Navionics loaded. Purchased the charts with the app.

Downloaded updates from Garmin and updated my 7612.

How do I now sync my Navionics with the 7612? Or, is that only done through the Active Captain App (I can now see Active Captain icon on my chartplotter)?

Thanks for getting me this far... I'm getting close.

Thanks,
Bobby

This is my method:
Open the Active Captain icon on your chart plotter
Go to settings in your iPad , Wifi connections, look for your Garmin named WiFi, select
The upper right hand corner of the chart plotter screen will show when you are connected.

Now it is time to play around with it.

I don't sync my Navionics with the chart plotter. I use Navionics as a separate navigation devise. I do use my Navionics to do route planning because I like the auto routing better than the G3 auto routing.

When you export the routes created on Navionics to Active Captain you will find them in your Data. Open the Active Captain app on the iPad , go to Charts, top right corner three lines, select , screen user data select, and the route created on Navionics will be located there. When you sync your iPad to your Garmin plotter using the Garmin WIFI the user data from the iPad will be transferred to the user data on the Garmin plotter. You will now see the route created by the Navionics available to use on the Garmin.

There is much more that can be done using theses apps. I just use the basics. Once I know how to use the basics I try to use more. I keep it simple.

Thanks, Brian.

I appreciate all your help!

This is fun stuff. And now I can play with my charts at home (instead of doing my chores!).

I'll report back my successes.

Best,
Bobby
