We are going crabbing in Hunter Bay for the first time on Sunday. The wind forecast is SW at 21 knots on Sunday night. We would like to anchor out. Is this a protected anchorage with SW winds? Our backup moorage would be on the east side of James Is

Only anchored there one time. Good holding bottom. Seems protected from everything but E and ENE winds. There were SW winds on the day we were there and it was fine. Can’t comment on how good the crabbing might be.

When there are strong westerlies on the Strait, it can get wild, but the anchorage is shallow with good holding and lots of room to let out enough scope. Most sheltered is usually a spot along the western shore north of the crescent beach and the small bight with houses (the wind funnels through the bight). Crabbing in years past has been excellent on opening weekend.

smcavana, thanks for the specific description of an anchorage. the wind is going to really pipe up on Sunday night when a front arrives. we’ll think of you during our (hopeful) crab feast

So, how did it go, anchoring and crabbing? Wasn't too windy here in Skyline, Anacortes.

The wind didn’t arrive until the next afternoon, so we had a calm night at anchor. We changed the crabbing strategy and found nice crab near Blakely Is.
